In data architecture at PwC, you will focus on designing and implementing the structure and organisation of data assets within the organisation. Your work will involve developing data models, defining data standards, and establishing data integration frameworks. You will assist in confirming that data is stored, accessed, and utilised efficiently, enabling seamless data flow across systems and supporting effective data management practices.

As a Data GovernanceManager, you willbe responsible forimplementing andmaintainingdata governance policies and practices that ensure the integrity, security, and usability of data assets across the organization. Your role will be vital in fostering a culture of accountability and transparency in data management while collaborating with various teams to support the firm’s commitment to quality, responsible digitization, and ethicaloperations.You will align closely with DAMA-DMBOKbest practices, drive regulatory compliance, uplift data quality, and enable trusted, innovative analytics.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Data Governance Implementation:

Develop and implement data governance policies, procedures, and standards to ensure data quality, integrity, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Monitor adherence to governance policies across the organization, promoting accountability among data stakeholders.

Assist with establishing and run the governance operating model: councils/committees, stewardship community, RACI, policy lifecycle, standards and control library.

Track governance OKRs/KPIs; perform maturity assessments and periodic control effectiveness reviews.

2. Data Quality Assurance:

Collaborate with data owners and stewards to define data quality metrics and implement processes to monitor and improve data quality.

Conduct data quality assessments and audits to identify data issues, providing actionable recommendations for remediation.

3. Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:

Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Data Architects, Data Analysts, and business units, to align data governance practices with strategic objectives.

Act as a liaison between technical and non-technical stakeholders to facilitate effective communication and understanding of data governance principles.

4. Training and Awareness:

Develop training materials and conduct workshops to educate staff on data governance best practices, roles, and responsibilities within the data management framework.

Promote awareness of data governance initiatives across the organization to foster a culture of data stewardship and accountability.

5. Change leadership and delivery

Lead complex, multi-workstream governance implementations; manage scope, budget, risk and stakeholders; integrate change management and training/adoption plans.

Coach and develop Data Stewards, BAs and Engineers and other relevant stakeholders; build internal capability and reusable accelerators.

6. Data Stewardship Support:

Support data stewards in managing and maintaining data definitions, lineage, and metadata to ensure that the organization's data is accurate and well-documented.

Assist in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive data catalog to improve data accessibility and usability.

7. Regulatory Compliance:

Stay informed about relevant data protection regulations and industry standards, ensuring that data governance frameworks continuously align with compliance requirements.

Assist in audits and assessments related to data governance and compliance, providing insights and supporting corrective actions.

8. Continuous Improvement:

Identify opportunities to enhance data governance processes, tools, and techniques, leveraging innovative approaches to improve overall data management strategies.

Contribute to ongoing assessments of the effectiveness of data governance practices, proposing adjustments based on industry trends and organizational needs.

9. Documentation and Reporting:

Maintain comprehensive documentation related to data governance policies, processes, and controls, ensuring clarity and ease of access for stakeholders.

Assist with defining enterprise policies and standards for data classification, ownership/accountability, critical data elements (CDEs), metadata and lineage, data quality, access and entitlements, retention/disposal, data sharing and third-party data risk.

Map controls to regulations and frameworks (GDPR, POPIA) HIPAA, PCI DSS/SOX as applicable.

Assist with establishing MDM policies and processes (match/merge, survivorship, golden records) with appropriate stewardship and data domain ownership.

Prepare and present reports to management on data governance initiatives, compliance status, and recommendations for improvement.

Qualifications and Skills:

Education:

Bachelor degree in Information Technology, Data Science, Business Administration, or equivalent experience.

Certifications in data governance (e.g., DAMA Certified Data Management Professional) . If not currently certified, willingness to obtain within 12 months.

Experience: Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in data governance, data quality management, or related roles within a complex organizational environment.

Technical Skills:

Strong understanding of data governance frameworks, data quality principles, and best practices.

Proficient in data management tools and technologies, with experience in data modeling, metadata management, and data profiling.

Hands-on implementation experience with governance tools (catalog, glossary, lineage, stewardship workflows).

Strong data quality, metadata and MDM governance experience.

Solid knowledge of data privacy/security regulations (GDPR, POPIA) and AI governance frameworks.

Working knowledge of BI and analytics tools such as Power BI

Governance design: Policy/control design, RACI and stewardship.

Technical depth: DQ/MDM, access/entitlements

Soft Skills:

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Analytical and detail-oriented mindset, with a proactive approach to problem solving and decision making.

Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills; able to influence C-level and coach domain stewards.

Change and adoption: Training, communications, community building and measurable uptake.
