Role: SAP BASIS Architect

Location: Pune (Hybrid)

Smith & Nephew (S+N) is a large multinational Medical Technology organization with an extensive Enterprise Applications ecosystem to run end-to-end business operations. ERPs form the core of this ecosystem and are tightly integrated with best-in-class systems such as Salesforce, Windchill, Movemedical, Maestro, Ariba, Workday and many more. At S+N, SAP serves as our primary and strategic ERP platform, running 80% of our operations and revenue. We are seeking an SAP BASIS Architect to manage and optimize SAP systems across on-premises, Microsoft Azure, and SAP HEC environments, while supporting and preparing for our strategic transition to SAP S/4HANA. This pivotal role will help drive Smith & Nephew's digital transformation and enable sustained business growth.

What will you be doing?

  • SAP BASIS Architect is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing SAP landscapes. This role ensures optimal performance, scalability, and high availability of SAP systems, while driving modernization initiatives such as cloud migration, automation, and integration strategies.
  • Additionally, on an ongoing basis scheduling and executing the SAP transport system; collaborating with the support team on resolving SAP transport issues, Performance Tuning suggestions and source code problems.
  • Define SAP architecture and landscape maintenance (SAP ECC, S/4HANA, HANA DB, BTP etc.). Lead Enhancement and Service pack upgrades, migrations, and cloud adoption initiatives.
  • Monitor service performance and support the Vendor teams in daily operations. Coordinate SAP BASIS activities across projects and ensure alignment with delivery timelines.
  • Design high availability, disaster recovery, and performance optimization strategies. Ensure security, compliance, and system stability. Ensure the application of OS and DB level patches proactively. Continuously identify and implement improvements to enhance SAP system performance, security, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and guide BASIS operations.
  • Participate in SAP related projects (releases and/or rollouts) and conduct requirement gathering, fit/gap analysis. Support with System landscapes, upgrades, Refreshes, Change and Transport management etc.
  • Perform L3 support for live countries. Ensure consistency of processes and procedures across all SAP landscapes.
  • Focus on continuous improvement, that can help and support the company growth and strategy.

What will you need to be successful?

  • Education: Bachelor’s / Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, IT or related subject preferred.
  • Licenses/ Certifications:
    - SAP Administration related certification.

- ITIL Qualifications

  • Experience: 10+ years of SAP BASIS with strong architecture experience.
  • This role will be based in Pune and will be 2 days working from office in Hybrid mode. Shift Timing (12:30 PM – 9:30 PM IST) Monday to Friday.
  • Experience in a full cycle of an ERP implementation based on a core solution and multi-country deployment.
  • In-depth knowledge/experience in the following areas:- Strong SAP Basis Administration and Hands-on experience in SAP ECC, SAP S4 HANA and HANA DB.
  • Experience in Cloud platforms (AWS/Azure etc.). Architecture design and landscape planning. Automation tools. Strong knowledge of HA/DR, performance tuning, and system migrations.
  • Good experience working with Middleware technologies for Integrations. Fair knowledge in OS and DB Administration. Integrations with SAP and Non-SAP applications.
  • Experience in other technical areas - SAP Security / ABAP is a plus. Experience in a regulated industry and/or medical device company preferred.
  • Large transformational projects. Strong stakeholder and vendor management skills. Good functional and technical understanding of SAP business processes and models.
  • Ability to work effectively with globally distributed, cross-cultural teams. Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
  • Detail-oriented, well-organized, and able to prioritize multiple tasks effectively. Awareness of software development standards, processes, and QA practices (preferred).
