This is a hybrid position with a minimum of three days in-office required.

This position is responsible for the architecture, administration, security, availability, performance, and lifecycle management of the SAP technical landscape across both on-premises and cloud environments. The role is critical to ensuring the SAP environment remains resilient, scalable, and aligned with broader digital transformation goals as the organization advances its migration to SAP S/4HANA.

This role is ideal for a seasoned SAP Basis professional who has evolved with SAP's modern technology stack. The successful candidate will possess deep expertise in traditional SAP Basis administration while also demonstrating strong hands-on experience with SAP S/4HANA, RISE with SAP, SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), SAP Integration Suite, cloud-native and hybrid SAP environments, identity management, middleware, and connectivity solutions. This individual will serve as a technical architect, subject matter expert, and trusted advisor, partnering with Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Development, Functional SAP teams, vendors, and implementation partners to design, build, secure, and support a modern SAP platform. This role also supports governance, compliance, disaster recovery, operational resilience, knowledge transfer, and long-term internal capability building.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer, maintain, and support enterprise SAP environments across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid platforms. Perform advanced SAP Basis administration, including monitoring, performance tuning, transports, patching, upgrades, refreshes, client copies, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management.
  • Support SAP S/4HANA transition activities and serve as a primary technical resource for SAP RISE, including customer-managed responsibilities, ECS coordination, maintenance planning, release support, service requests, and issue resolution
  • Provide architecture, administration, and governance support for SAP BTP and hybrid platform design, including accounts, subaccounts, entitlements, connectivity, trust configuration, tenant strategy, standards, and best practices supporting digital transformation
  • Administer and support SAP BTP services and SAP Integration Suite components to enable secure, scalable integration across SAP and enterprise platforms, including middleware, API management, event-driven services, and related connectivity solutions
  • Configure and support SSO, certificate-based authentication, secure communications, SAP Cloud Identity Services, identity federation, and secure access management across SAP cloud and on-premises environments
  • Support SAP cloud solutions and integrations, including SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP Datasphere, SuccessFactors, and other connected SAP services.
  • Contribute to cybersecurity, infrastructure coordination, disaster recovery readiness, governance, audit preparedness, and compliance management in a complex SAP environment
  • Participate in after-hours support, extended work schedules, and on-call rotation as needed.

Official SMUD Classification: Enterprise Application Administrator Journey

Purpose

To administer enterprise software applications to ensure a state-of-the-art, stable, accurate, and reliable enterprise computing environment that meets the needs of the organization.

Nature and Scope

This is the journey level (J) within the Enterprise Application Administrator classification series. Positions within this classification will demonstrate an ability to work on one's own with minimal oversight performing difficult and more complex work than the entry level (E). The journey level is distinguished from the senior level in that the latter requires a higher level of complexity, difficulty and level of tasks assigned, broader authority to make decisions, and advanced technical knowledge. Advancement to the senior level is done through a formal hiring process.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide 24/7 on-call and non-business-hour support for applications, as required.
  • Provide primary support on at least one major enterprise application or SAP Basis administration.
  • Provide secondary support for the other enterprise applications supported by the administrators group.
  • Serve as key person in troubleshooting system problems, taking ownership of problems to resolution.
  • Work with support analysts and technical staff to identify and resolve system issues, and coordinate and schedule system installations, upgrades, and patches.
  • Coordinate and schedule system backups and restorations.
  • Coordinate and schedule and perform operating system, application, database and client tools patching and maintenance, and support migration of changes. Ensure patches are fully tested in test environments before moving to production systems.
  • Identify, evaluate and install application software patches.
  • Configure systems / applications from a technical perspective.
  • Ensures adherence to Service Level Agreements regarding application availability for applications with a large number of users.
  • Perform system sizing estimates.
  • Interface with software vendors for bug resolution, licensing issues, and system maintenance issues.
  • Install new application software releases and version upgrades.
  • Support, monitor, test, and troubleshoot hardware and software problems in support of applications.
  • Plan, create, and maintain appropriate procedures, documentation, inventory assessments, and other procedures related to administration of software applications, system and network (connectivity) architecture, system and database backup policies, and user management.
  • Administer application security including administration of application users, as necessary.
  • Provide ad hoc desktop support services for users of the applications.
  • Coordinate and/or provide user training for applications if necessary.
  • Conduct software and hardware evaluations and provide technical assessments.
  • Work with support analysts and technical staff to automate tasks, streamline processes, and perform administrative functions as needed.
  • Provide coordination of resources such as enterprise security, application development, network, operations, and analysts, in support of software applications.
  • Configure, maintain, and monitor batch jobs and related scripts; resolve any batch job or script errors.
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing, including assisting with fault tolerance and producing/maintaining disaster recovery plans.

Required Education

  • High School diploma or equilvalent

Required Experience Qualifications

  • At least three (3) years of progressively responsible relevant information technology work experience related to the administration of enterprise software applications.

Knowledge Of

Computer and software applications; methods and procedures involved in the administration of software applications to include the installation, setup, patching, troubleshooting, documentation and coordination; enterprise application systems design, configuration, and functionality; techniques of configuration, design and functionality; concepts of the system development lifecycle; concepts of data modeling; techniques and practices for resolving complex technical issues; data maintenance and retrieval; operating systems such as UNIX, Linux, Windows, or AIX.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Significant experience in SAP Basis administration within a complex enterprise environment.
  • Strong experience supporting SAP landscapes that include both traditional on-premises systems and modern cloud or hybrid SAP technologies.
  • Experience supporting SAP S/4HANA-related technical activities and lifecycle management.
  • Strong working knowledge of SAP RISE with SAP operational support, including customer-managed responsibilities, ECS coordination, release planning, technical issue resolution, and hybrid infrastructure coordination.
  • Experience providing SAP BTP architecture, administration, governance, and technical support across hybrid SAP landscapes.
  • Hands-on experience with SAP BTP services such as Cloud Foundry, Integration Suite, API Management, Event Mesh, destinations, connectivity, trust configuration, and tenant administration.
  • Strong experience with SAP Integration Suite and enterprise integration technologies, including secure interface design, middleware support, integration monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with identity management, secure authentication, Single Sign-On, certificate-based integrations, and SAP Cloud Identity Services such as IAS and IPS.
  • Familiarity with SAP cloud platforms such as SAP Analytics Cloud, Datasphere, Business Data Cloud, SuccessFactors, Cloud ALM, and related connected services.
  • Strong understanding of middleware, connectivity solutions, and cross-platform SAP integrations in cloud and hybrid environments.
  • Experience with proactive system monitoring, incident response, root cause analysis, patching, refreshes, and performance tuning to improve platform resilience.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity, disaster recovery, governance, audit readiness, and compliance support within SAP environments.
  • Strong documentation, communication, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing skills.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and support emerging SAP technologies and evolving platform capabilities.
  • Ability to work extended hours and participate in on-call support as needed.
  • Experience serving in technical architecture or lead administrator role for SAP BTP or hybrid SAP platform solutions.
  • Experience designing secure connectivity and identity federation across SAP cloud and on-premises platforms.
  • Experience with SAP Cloud ALM, monitoring frameworks, and operational dashboards.
  • Familiarity with emerging SAP cloud products.
  • Experience supporting enterprise modernization efforts, platform governance, and cloud migration strategy.
  • Certifications in SAP
