The Company

J.J. McDonnell was founded in 1945 and was originally located in the downtown Baltimore Seafood Market. In 1984, J.J. McDonnell relocated its operations to the Maryland Seafood Market in Jessup, Maryland. In October of 2016 J.J. McDonnell moved into a larger facility in Elkridge, Maryland, where we currently reside. J.J. McDonnell has established a market leadership position in Maryland, Washington D.C, and Northern Virginia as a provider of high-quality seafood products and services.

Over the years, the product focus has transitioned from predominately fresh fish to a healthy mix of fresh and frozen seafood. We cater to a wide range of customers, from Retail to Bar & Grill, Sushi to American Steakhouse, or from small ‘Mom and Pop’ stores to a large National Chain.

The Opportunity

The Sanitation Lead supports the Sanitation Supervisor in maintaining regulatory compliance programs such as HACCP, BRC, SSOP, GMP, FDA, and MSC. This role involves hands-on sanitation practices, ensuring proper cleaning procedures are followed and documented. Key duties include verifying end-of-shift sanitation, completing master cleaning tasks, managing waste and recycling systems, maintaining sanitation equipment and supply inventory, and training staff on sanitation protocols.

The Sanitation Lead is also responsible for authoring sanitation procedures, conducting regular inspections and tests, and staying informed on industry regulations. This role plays a critical part in ensuring food safety, cleanliness, and regulatory compliance throughout the facility.

Responsibilities

The Sanitation Lead key responsibilities include:

  • Support in the maintenance and development of all current and future regulatory programs that (HACCP, BRC, SSOP, GMP, FDA, MSC).
  • Physically observe sanitation procedures for all levels of employment, coach employees on proper procedure and technique. Report corrective actions to QA/QC Manager and pertinent managers.
  • Verify sanitation was properly done at the end of each shift. Verify sanitation sheets properly completed.
  • Complete tasks outlined on the master cleaning sheets.
  • Supervise trash and recycling programs (trailers).
  • Develop and author procedures, as needed, to support quality and operations departments in the proper sanitation of the facility.
  • Maintain sanitation room and monitor sanitation of equipment.
  • Maintain inventory of chemicals, PPE, and sanitation tools.
  • Support training of employees for sanitation related education.
  • Research and study food processing, current industry events, changes, mandates, etc. to keep a safe, clean facility.
  • Meet established goals and objectives by setting deadlines and completing them in a thorough manner.
  • Routine tasks:
  • Verification of daily sanitation sheets
  • Completion of master cleaning sheets
  • Inventory chemicals and PPE
  • Monitor pallet and recycling trailers
  • Daily protein checks
  • Weekly listeria testing
  • Perform duties of Sanitation Supervisor when supervisor is on vacation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor, as needed.

Reporting Relationship

The Sanitation Lead reports to the Sanitation Supervisor.

Education and Certifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Completed HACCP training program with certificate.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Seven to ten years of progressively responsible, related experience in a position of comparable scope and size to the Company in the seafood industry.
  • Forklift experience preferred!
  • Able to learn SeaSoft software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent problem solving and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must have great attention to detail.
  • Able to manage a large volume of detailed work with accuracy.
  • Able to transfer attention from one task to another frequently without affecting performance.
  • Proficiency with computers – used for inventory and communicating coaching and equipment orders.
  • Able to present HACCP information and respond to questions from employees, customers, and governmental agencies.
  • Must be able to read and write in English. Able to speak Spanish a plus.
  • Must have a positive attitude.
