Summary

This position is responsible for the supervision and operation of Sanitation Drivers and trucks within assigned areas for the City. Work is performed under general supervision of the Division Chief and Manager.

This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply.

Per Florida Statute 295.065, certain servicemembers and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such servicemembers and veterans, receive preference and priority, and that certain servicemembers may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements, in employment by the state and its political subdivisions and are encouraged to apply for the positions being filled.

Examples of duties

  • Supervises and may participate in the work of Sanitation drivers and technicians, it includes but is not limited to, scheduling, making assignments, addressing personnel issues, and filling in as a driver as needed.
  • May be called upon to fill in for the Sanitation Chief and/or Manager as needed to oversee the division.
  • Establishes and maintains efficient and effective records, and compiles data and prepares various records, reports, and other documentation required.
  • Checks progress of work and resolves problems or complaints.
  • May drive, operate, lift and dump refuse containers utilizing a sanitation collection vehicle.
  • Instructs employees in safe and efficient procedures and methods to perform their duties.
  • Ensure drivers perform pre-trip inspections of trucks to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Assists in the establishment or revision of assigned department rules and regulations.
  • Holds regular safety training sessions for personnel.
  • May coordinate solid waste and recycling for special events. May coordinate garbage cans, carts, dumpsters or garbage trucks for special events as required.
  • Implements and enforces City Personnel, Departmental Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains telephone service/communications and may be placed on emergency call outs, rotating shifts, on call duties, and extended hours in emergency situations.
  • May perform office functions such as Employee evaluations, data entry, providing information, etc.
  • May coordinate work with other Foremen’s and Operation Chief’s to ensure completion of task.
  • May perform customer service work such as delivering carts to new residents and the repair of carts.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Class “B” Commercial Florida Driver’s License with air brake endorsement.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in the operation of sanitation vehicles to include Side Loaders, Rear Loaders, Recycle and Clam trucks.
  • Obtain FEMA IS100, IS700 and IS200 within 6 months from date of employment.

In some cases, an equivalent combination of higher education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.

Physical Demands

  • Continual medium work and occasional heavy work.
  • Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 80 pounds.
  • Requires frequent walking and standing, climbing, stooping, reaching, and bending.
  • Good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
  • Good eyesight, hearing and speech.
  • Regular driving of vehicle.
  • Able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.

Work Environment

Works outside in sometimes adverse environmental conditions (e.g., heat, cold, and rain) for moderate periods of time with exposure to but not limited to bright/dim lights, dust/pollen, intense noise, vibration, fumes/noxious odors, toxic/caustic chemicals, disease/pathogens, and moving machinery, and traffic.
