RaceTrac Company Overview

Job Description:

The Tax Analyst role is an opportunity for a high-potential, early-career professional who is analytical, professionally curious, and driven to build deep technical tax expertise. This individual will support the Company’s indirect tax function by reviewing and analyzing sales and use tax returns, maintaining tax-related general ledger accounts, researching applicable state and local tax laws, and contributing to identified planning opportunities across multiple industries, including convenience retail, fast casual dining, fuel, and real estate. The role requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, the ability to manage several projects and deadlines at once, and a proactive mindset toward learning new tax technical positions, leveraging technology, and improving processes to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.

What You'll Do:

  • Perform a variety of tax accounting and analytical functions, including tax research, report preparation, account reconciliations, tax analysis, and support for identified planning opportunities across multiple business lines.
  • Review and analyze tax general ledger activity to identify, investigate, and resolve discrepancies while developing a deeper understanding of tax accounting processes and controls.
  • Support the monthly sales and use tax compliance process by gathering and reconciling return data, reviewing draft returns for accuracy and completeness, preparing general ledger entries associated with tax payments, and identifying opportunities to streamline recurring compliance tasks.
  • Use technology to compile, organize, and analyze documentation for tax audits, compliance activities, and planning projects, with a focus on improving efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility of tax data.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams, including Construction, Accounting, Merchandising, Supply and Distribution, and business leaders across convenience retail, fast casual dining, fuel, and real estate, to gather relevant information and ensure appropriate tax treatment.
  • Research, interpret, and apply tax laws and regulations to support compliance, business decisions, and the development of tax technical positions.
  • Develop proficiency in tax technology platforms such as Vertex O Series and Thomson Reuters Checkpoint, and apply those tools to improve research, compliance, documentation, and workflow efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities to improve tax processes, controls, and procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Manage multiple assignments, deadlines, and follow-up items across recurring compliance processes, research requests, audits, and planning projects.
  • Demonstrate professional curiosity by asking thoughtful questions, seeking to understand the business purpose behind tax positions, and proactively building knowledge of indirect tax issues across the Company’s business lines.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred.
  • 1–3 years of accounting, tax, finance, audit, or other analytical business experience preferred.
  • Exposure to indirect tax concepts, sales and use tax compliance, reconciliations, or regulatory/compliance processes is a plus.
  • Strong Excel and analytical skills preferred, including the ability to organize, reconcile, and analyze data efficiently.
  • Experience with, or demonstrated ability to quickly learn, tax, accounting, research, or enterprise technology platforms such as Alteryx, Vertex, Workday, and Checkpoint is a plus.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, initiative, and willingness to learn new technical concepts, business processes, and technology tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and follow through on assignments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate questions, findings, and recommendations clearly while exercising sound judgment and attention to detail.
