Job Description
Overview
Hexagon’s Autonomous Solutions division is looking for a Sales Engineering Intern to join our Business Development Technology Integration team in Calgary, AB, starting May 2027. This role offers a unique opportunity to work hands-on with advanced positioning, autonomy, and multi-sensor technologies while contributing to real customer projects.
In this role you will have the opportunity to collaborate with software, systems, and integration experts to help develop embedded software, integrate GNSS and sensor technologies, build proof-of-concept prototypes, and support demonstrations and customer trials. You will gain practical experience across hardware, software, and system integration while seeing how new technology moves from an initial idea to a working solution in the field.
This is a varied, fast-moving role for a student who enjoys solving practical problems and wants to build skills across embedded development, CAN and ROS integration, sensor systems, vehicle installation, and prototype fabrication. Your work will directly support the team’s customer engagements and next-generation demonstrations.
The Location: This position is based onsite in Calgary, AB. Hands-on lab and vehicle work is central to the role; remote arrangements are not available for this position.
Responsibilities
As Engineering Intern you will be responsible for these activities:
- Support embedded software development, including sensor bring-up, driver integration, firmware debugging, and C/C++ or Python development
- Test and validate embedded configurations in lab and field environments under the guidance of senior BD Technical Specialists
- Document software processes, configurations, and lessons learned to build knowledge within the team
- Integrate radar, lidar, and camera sensors with GNSS/INS systems, including their interfaces and communication protocols
- Develop and test CAN bus interfaces and work within ROS environments to support customer integrations and demonstrations
- Troubleshoot sensor communication issues and reproduce customer-reported problems in the lab
- Build and assemble proof-of-concept prototypes for demonstrations, customer trials, and rapid technical requests
- Install sensors and equipment in vehicles, including minor modifications needed for integration
- Fabricate antenna mounts, equipment brackets, and sensor mounting plates to support customer and demonstration needs
- Configure equipment to reproduce customer issues and support technical investigations
- Contribute to technical documentation, team procedures, and best practices
- Support pre-sales technical activities and post-sales follow-up as needed
Qualifications
Must Have:
- Enrolled in the Engineering Internship/Co-op program and have completed at least your 2nd or 3rd year of studies by the start of your work term
- Enrolled in Electrical Engineering, Geomatics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related program at an accredited post-secondary institution
- Available for a minimum 12-month work term at 37.5 hours per week, onsite in Calgary
- Demonstrated experience with C/C++ and/or Python programming, either through coursework or personal projects
- Comfortable with hands-on physical work in a lab or workshop environment, including use of basic hand tools and fabrication techniques
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly document technical work
Nice To Have:
- Experience working on student vehicle projects. Experience with sensor mounting and interfacing would be particularly valuable.
- Experience with embedded Linux, real-time operating systems, or bare-metal embedded development
- Familiarity with CAN bus protocols and tooling (e.g., CANalyzer, Python-CAN, Vector tools)
- Experience with Robot Operating System (ROS or ROS2), including writing nodes, working with topics, and integrating sensor drivers
- Exposure to radar, lidar, or camera sensors in an automotive or robotics context
- Experience with Python scripting for data analysis, automation, or hardware interfacing
- Familiarity with GNSS and/or GNSS+INS positioning systems
- Experience with mechanical fabrication: drilling, tapping, working with aluminum extrusion (e.g., 80/20), or sheet metal
- Interest in autonomous vehicles, mobile robotics, or intelligent transportation systems
Key Success Factors:
- Practical problem-solver who is energized by challenges that blend software and hardware
- Self-starter who can take a task from ambiguous description to working prototype
- Detail-oriented and methodical, with a “first-time right” approach to configuration and integration work
- Comfortable with ambiguity and rapid context-switching in a fast-paced, customer-driven environment
- Collaborative team player who knows when to work independently and when to ask for help
