Sales Engineer (MEP/HVAC)

1. Position Details

  • Department: Projects

  • Reports To: Operations Manager – Projects & Service

  • Location: Jamaica

  • Employment Type: Full-Time

2. Role Overview

The Sales Engineer is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and technically compliant cost estimates for Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) projects.

This role plays a critical part in revenue generation by supporting bid submissions, pricing strategy, and improving bid success rates. It combines strong engineering knowledge with commercial awareness and client engagement.

3. Key Responsibilities

Sales & Pipeline Management

  • Support the sales pipeline by tracking all incoming RFPs, RFQs, and tender opportunities

  • Maintain a structured bid pipeline log with status tracking

  • Collaborate with management to prioritize high-value opportunities

  • Provide input on bid/no-bid decisions based on feasibility and commercial viability

  • Monitor conversion rates and analyze lost bids

  • Assist in pricing strategies aligned with revenue and margin targets

  • Ensure timely follow-up on submitted bids

  • Contribute to client relationship development during the tender stage

Estimation & Costing

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for MEP systems, including:

    • HVAC systems (VRF, chilled water, ventilation, ductwork, piping)

    • Electrical systems

    • Plumbing systems

    • Fire detection and suppression systems

  • Perform quantity take-offs from drawings and specifications

  • Develop Bills of Quantities (BOQs)

  • Analyze labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor costs

Tendering & Bid Management

  • Review RFPs, specifications, and tender documents

  • Identify risks, exclusions, and scope gaps

  • Prepare technical and commercial submissions

  • Ensure compliance with submission deadlines and requirements

Supplier & Subcontractor Coordination

  • Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations

  • Negotiate pricing and maintain a supplier database

Design & Technical Support

  • Collaborate with design engineers

  • Identify inefficiencies and propose value engineering solutions

Cost Optimization

  • Recommend cost-saving alternatives

  • Optimize system selections to improve competitiveness

Data & Reporting

  • Maintain a cost database

  • Track bid performance and generate reports

4. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Bid turnaround time

  • Estimate accuracy

  • Gross margin performance

  • Bid win rate

  • Number of bids submitted

5. Qualifications & Experience

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in:

    • Mechanical Engineering

    • Electrical Engineering

    • Building Services Engineering

  • Equivalent experience in MEP estimation or project engineering will also be considered

Experience:

  • 3–7+ years in HVAC/MEP estimation, design, or related field

  • Experience in commercial or industrial projects is preferred

6. Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills

  • Strong understanding of HVAC and MEP systems

  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications
