Sales Engineer – Data Center & AI Infrastructure
Remote, U.S. | $140K–$180K Base | $187K–$240K OTE | 30–40% Travel
If you know data center infrastructure well enough to walk into a data hall, understand what actually needs to happen, and turn that into a solution a customer can trust and a delivery team can execute, this is worth a conversation.
This is not a traditional sales role.
We are looking for a Sales Engineer who can bridge the gap between highly technical customer conversations and the commercial side of large-scale data center infrastructure projects.
You’ll partner closely with business development and delivery teams, serving as the technical lead from early discovery through solution design, estimating, proposal development, and ultimately handoff to the team executing the work.
The company operates in a fast-growing part of the data center and AI infrastructure market, supporting organizations building and expanding some of the most demanding compute environments in the industry.
Why This Role Stands Out
You won’t be brought in at the end of the sales process just to answer technical questions.
You’ll have meaningful ownership over how opportunities are scoped, designed, estimated, and positioned
You’ll have the opportunity to:
Work directly with sophisticated data center, network engineering, and infrastructure teams
Help shape solutions for large-scale data center and AI infrastructure deployments
Own technical discovery, solution design, and estimating
Influence whether opportunities should move forward before commitments are made
Stay connected to projects through mobilization and delivery
Help improve the tools, estimating models, and technical standards used across the commercial team
Work remotely while remaining close to active customer environments and projects
What You’ll Do
Lead Technical Discovery
Meet directly with customer network engineering, data center operations, and project teams
Lead site walks, technical discovery sessions, and physical infrastructure assessments
Evaluate existing infrastructure, constraints, dependencies, and project risks
Identify technical issues early and help determine the right approach before a proposal is developed
Design & Estimate Solutions
Build deployment strategies including phasing, sequencing, staffing, shifts, and site logistics
Develop labor and material estimates for infrastructure projects
Produce bills of material and takeoffs for cabling, optics, conveyance, testing equipment, and related infrastructure
Evaluate alternate approaches and help customers understand technical and cost trade-offs
Ensure the proposed scope, estimate, and delivery plan all align
Develop Technical Proposals
Write technical portions of proposals and statements of work
Define scope, execution methodology, assumptions, exclusions, deliverables, and acceptance criteria
Support RFPs, RFIs, and customer technical questionnaires
Help scope and price changes when project requirements evolve
Be the Technical Voice in the Room
Present solutions to senior network engineers, operations leaders, and other technical stakeholders
Lead design sessions, technical workshops, and whiteboard conversations
Translate complex technical concepts for both technical and nontechnical decision-makers
Serve as a trusted technical advisor throughout the sales process
Partner With Delivery
Help transition awarded work from sales into project delivery
Communicate estimating assumptions, risks, and commitments clearly to operations and project teams
Stay involved through project mobilization to resolve scope questions
Compare actual project performance against original estimates and use those lessons to improve future pursuits
Technical Areas You May Work Across
Depending on the opportunity, projects may involve:
Data center network deployment
Leaf-spine and top-of-rack network architecture
BGP, ECMP, EVPN, VLAN and VXLAN environments
Network refreshes, migrations, and cutovers
AI and high-performance computing infrastructure
InfiniBand and RoCE fabrics
GPU cluster deployments
Structured cabling and physical infrastructure
Fiber and copper plant
Cable tray, conveyance, pathways, and space planning
Rack elevations and port mapping
Migration sequencing, rollback planning, and methods of procedure
Layer 1 data center operations
What We’re Looking For
You do not need to be the deepest expert in every area above.
The ideal candidate brings deep hands-on expertise in either data center networking or structured cabling/physical infrastructure, along with enough familiarity with the other side to develop a complete solution.
You’ll ideally bring:
5+ years of experience within data center infrastructure, network deployment, structured cabling, or critical facilities
2+ years in a customer-facing pre-sales, solution architecture, or technical consulting capacity
Strong hands-on knowledge of data center networking and/or physical infrastructure
Experience building labor and material estimates that were ultimately sold and delivered
Strong technical writing skills, including scopes of work, methods of procedure, or technical design documents
Confidence communicating with senior network engineers and data center operations leaders
The ability to translate a technical solution for procurement, finance, or other nontechnical stakeholders
Ability to travel approximately 30–40%
Even Better If You Have
Experience across both networking and structured cabling
InfiniBand or RoCE experience
GPU cluster or AI infrastructure deployment experience
Live production migration and cutover experience
Experience supporting hyperscale, colocation, AI compute, or other large data center environments
Familiarity with major networking platforms such as Cisco, Arista, Juniper, or NVIDIA/Mellanox
BICSI, CCNP, JNCIP, DCDC, RCDD, or similar certifications
Working knowledge of data center power and cooling considerations
Compensation
Base Salary: $140,000–$180,000 DOE
Target OTE: $187,000–$240,000
Compensation Mix: 75% base / 25% variable
Variable Compensation: Uncapped
The variable portion of compensation is tied primarily to the performance of the business development team you support, along with individual objectives such as estimating accuracy, proposal quality, and technical win rate.
Variable compensation is paid at target during the initial ramp period.
Benefits
Benefits include:
Medical, dental, and vision coverage
401(k) with company match
Paid time off
Paid company holidays
Reimbursed business travel and expenses
Location & Travel
This position is remote within the United States, with preference for candidates located near an active data center market.
Expect approximately 30–40% travel for customer meetings, technical discovery, site surveys, data hall walkthroughs, and design sessions.
If you’re someone who enjoys being both technical and customer-facing, likes solving complex infrastructure problems before they become delivery problems, and wants to play a meaningful role in the continued expansion of data center and AI infrastructure, this could be an exciting next step.
