Job Description

The Safety Technician is responsible for supporting Whitaker Construction’s safety program through job site inspections, hazard identification, safety training, incident investigations, and implementation of company safety policies and procedures. This position works closely with the HSE team and field personnel to promote a safe work environment, ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety standards, and support the successful execution of construction projects.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct job site inspections and safety audits to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and Whitaker Construction safety policies and procedures.
  • Identify potential hazards and assist field personnel in developing and implementing appropriate corrective actions.
  • Conduct safety pre-task briefings with individual crews.
  • Conduct site orientation training for employees and project personnel.
  • Attend and present site-specific and activity-specific safety training for construction projects.
  • Support the development and delivery of safety training, toolbox talks, and other safety-related presentations.
  • Participate as an instructor in Whitaker Construction’s OSHA 10 Construction course as assigned.
  • Conduct and assist with incident investigations and document findings.
  • Document and report safety violations, incidents, near misses, and corrective actions.
  • Assist with the development, review, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Develop and assist with site-specific safety plans for individual projects.
  • Assist with third-party site audits, including owner and insurance company audits.
  • Assist with managing claims arising from construction activities.
  • Participate in workers’ compensation claim management, including appropriate follow-up and coordination of medical visits.
  • Maintain safety equipment and assist with the availability, inventory, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety supplies.
  • Support the ordering, receiving, stocking, and distribution of safety supplies and PPE.
  • Maintain accurate safety documentation, records, reports, and training documentation.
  • Complete required safety, task-specific, driver file, and company training.
  • Work closely with safety managers, field personnel, supervisors, and other departments to promote a strong safety culture across job sites.
  • Travel to and work at various Whitaker Construction project locations as required.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors.
  • Regular and timely attendance.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous construction or safety-related experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety practices preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to identify hazards and communicate corrective actions effectively.
  • Ability to present safety information and training to individuals and groups.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to conduct inspections, document findings, and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with management, supervisors, employees, vendors, and internal and external customers.
  • Display a willing attitude to learn from others.
  • Possess a strong sense of personal responsibility.
  • Proficient utilizing computers including Microsoft products, Smartphone, and iPad.
  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver's license and have reliable transportation to get to and from work.

Physical Requirements

  • Able and willing to work long hours, including working outside of normal hours in order to meet bid deadlines.
  • Able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch, and lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.
  • Able to work in outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
