                This position is responsible for overseeing transportation safety, and regulatory compliance across daily operations. This role ensures the safe movement of materials, adherence to OSHA, DOT, and hazmat regulations, and the consistent enforcement of company safety policies. This position provides oversight, training, investigations, and continuous improvement to maintain a safe and compliant environment.   • Five (5) years of experience working in Safety on an industrial site.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration), NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), IH (Industrial Hygiene), DOT/GHS (Hazardous materials), and ergonomics.
  • Two (2) years of proven experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Intermediate to advanced written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing at various levels throughout the organization and with exterior organizations, candidates, etc.
  • Ability to think logically and analyze (problem solve; collect data and draw valid conclusions).
  • Intermediate PC skills (Word & Excel); provide reports, charts, create formulas.
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures involved in compliance issues.
  • Ability to travel domestically and abroad.
  • Ability to work independently, extended hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to coordinate programs, prepare reports and maintain accurate records.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 30 days of employment. 
Preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Possess the CSP certification (Certified Safety Professional).
  • Experience working in Ocean Transportation or Maritime Shipping industry.
 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversee the day-to-day functions of the department, ensuring regulatory compliance and promoting a culture of safety. 
  • Identify potential hazards and dangerous conditions in the workplace and take corrective actions. 
  • Ensure that all safety audits and inspections are completed in a timely manner and any deficiencies found are followed up on and corrected.
  • Coordinates Safety Committee meetings to promote a positive safety culture and engage its members for continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with crossfunctional teams to coordinate all required safety training across multiple facilities and work areas, ensuring trainings are completed on schedule, reviewing or developing training materials, facilitating instructional sessions, and verifying employee understanding through testing, demonstrations, or other competencyvalidation methods.  
  • Interact daily with operations management and employees to ensure a safe working environment while maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Maintains all records required to prove compliance with all state and federal laws and Safety programs.
  • Communicates with all levels of state and federal compliance bodies as necessary.
  • Assist the Safety/Hazmat Manager in the development and implementation of all safety policies/procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Oversee and execute the safety investigation process by ensuring all accident investigations are completed promptly and thoroughly, including gathering evidence, interviewing involved employees and witnesses, identifying root causes, and recommending corrective or preventative actions. Coordinate the communication of investigation findings and prevention measures across all applicable locations to support continuous improvement and reduce future risk.
  • Prepare reports regarding safety as necessary.
  • Maintains complete confidentiality of all information.
  • Develop, maintain, and update a library of safety references.
  • Ensure that disposal of hazardous waste is done in compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Act as team lead during emergency situations and liaison with local, state, and federal agencies as needed.
  • Mitigate the accidental release of chemicals in transportation, working together with the Hazmat Approval Office and operational team to safely contain, pick-up and dispose of any released substance.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The employee is continuously required to walk, talk, and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit and stand.  
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.  
  • The employee must occasionally use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel crouch, or craw; and smell.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb steep stairs and access tight spaces.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors and fellow employees.
  • Ability to follow procedures and instructions precisely.
  • Ability to work independently.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives direct supervision from the Hazmat/Safety Manager and indirectly from the Global Security & Compliance Director. Exercises supervision over one or more individuals on the Safety team.  SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Evaluate and report safety hazards.
  • Immediately respond to and investigate any incidents involving injury, illness, or property damage.
  • Develop, enforce and comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Prepare and lead meetings and training sessions.
  • Be constantly aware of the safety of all employees, property and equipment.
CONDITIONS:
  • Work is performed primarily in office, vehicles; exposed to changing weather (temperature & humidity) and outdoor environments, during day and night shifts.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving trucks/equipment and/or mechanical parts.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • May be required to work on holidays and weekends as necessary.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
