The Role
The Safety Supervisor is responsible for leading and supporting safety initiatives across assigned operations to ensure a safe and compliant work environment. This position partners with operational leadership to promote a culture of safety, oversee incident investigations, conduct audits, deliver training, and drive continuous improvement in safety performance. The Safety Supervisor provides guidance and coaching to employees and frontline leaders while ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
• Promote and reinforce a strong safety culture throughout assigned locations and operational areas.
• Partner with operational leadership to improve safety performance, accountability, and employee engagement.
• Provide leadership, guidance, and coaching to employees and supervisors regarding safe work practices.
• Conduct safety meetings, field observations, and driver coaching sessions.
• Support the implementation of company safety programs and initiatives.
• Lead investigations involving vehicle collisions, workplace injuries, near misses, and other safety-related incidents.
• Identify root causes and contributing factors through thorough investigations.
• Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to mitigate risk and prevent recurrence.
• Monitor safety trends and recommend process improvements to enhance safety performance.
• Conduct regular site visits, yard inspections, ride-alongs, and operational safety audits.
• Evaluate compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Assess driving routes, parking locations, equipment usage, and operational practices for safety risks.
• Document findings, communicate recommendations, and track corrective actions to completion.
• Coordinate and deliver safety training programs for new and existing employees.
• Support onboarding activities and ongoing employee development initiatives.
• Provide coaching and mentoring to improve safety awareness and performance.
• Evaluate training effectiveness and recommend enhancements as needed.
• Monitor compliance with company safety standards and applicable federal, state, provincial, and local regulations.
• Maintain accurate records related to investigations, audits, inspections, training, and corrective actions.
• Prepare and present safety performance reports, metrics, and trend analyses to leadership.
• Assist with regulatory inspections, audits, and compliance reviews.
• Collaborate with operational leaders, Human Resources, and other stakeholders to address safety concerns.
• Support organizational safety objectives and continuous improvement efforts.
• Assist in developing and implementing safety policies, procedures, and best practices
Required Qualifications
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in transportation safety, fleet safety, industrial safety, rail operations, or a related field.
• Experience conducting incident investigations, safety audits, and compliance reviews.
• Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and employee development skills.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
• Ability to analyze safety data and identify trends and improvement opportunities.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Ability to travel within an assigned territory as required.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
• Previous supervisory or leadership experience.
• Experience supporting multi-site operations.
• Knowledge of transportation, fleet, railroad, or industrial safety regulations and best practices.
• Experience delivering classroom and field-based safety training programs.
• Familiarity with telematics systems, driver monitoring technology, and safety management software.
• Professional safety certifications (e.g., CSP, ASP, SMS, OSHA certifications) preferred.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to work in both office and field environments.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and conduct field inspections as needed.
• Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
• Ability to travel frequently, including occasional overnight travel.
