Safety Specialist

Closing Date: 19th August 2026

Location: RG7 4PR, located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking.

This role will require the successful candidate to be willing and able to work across both AWE Aldermaston and AWE Burghfield sites.

Due to the classified nature of the work involved, there are limited opportunities to work from home in this role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at AWE.

Package: From £36,340 (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight. We will consider flexible working requests so that your work may fit in with your lifestyle. Just let us know your preferred working pattern on your application.

AWE is currently recruiting for a Safety Specialist to work across both our Aldermaston and Burghfield sites.

Within this role you will provide general/industrial/nuclear/explosives safety advice, guidance and operational support for the staff deployed within specified facilities and programmes.

You will follow agreed strategies in line with relevant legislation, industry standards and AWE’s policies, procedures and guidance. The role will require you to complete data reporting and associated documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that company strategies, policies and management system requirements for conventional health & safety are communicated and understood.

  • Maintaining and promoting high standards in Environment, Safety, Health, Security and Quality. Production of health & safety documentation for a project and/or portfolio.

  • Support to the local ESH Improvement Plans (culture, communications, etc).

  • Promoting learning and improvement through operational briefings, toolbox talks and presentations.

Who are we looking for?

We do need you to have the following:

  • Level 3 Qualification e.g. NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health & Safety, NEBOSH Construction Certificate or NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent.

  • Relevant experience of managing safety within an engineering and manufacturing site

Whilst not to be considered a tick list, we’d like you to have experience in some of the following:

  • IOSH grade of Affiliate, Associate or newly upgraded TechIOSH (in order to develop H&S competence through continuous professional development).

  • Commitment and willingness to undertake necessary training and update knowledge as and when required including CPD.

  • Lead by example, visibly demonstrating Company Values: Pride, Innovation, Excellence and Trust.

  • Flexible and adaptable approach to work.

  • Computer literate (IT/IS).

  • Safety advisor experience in a high hazard environment.

  • Investigation and inspection techniques.

  • Aspects of emergency response in a high hazard environment.

  • Customer service-related tasks and duties.

  • Evidence of effective team working.

  • Good knowledge and ability to interpret relevant legislation.

You’ll need to have the ability to work calmly and constructively in a priority changing environment and be able to manage your own workload. You will also have initiative, enthusiasm, a flexible approach, and ability to work to tight deadlines.
