Your Specific Responsibilities:

A professional laboratory staff responsible for inspecting the laboratory operation for all aspects of employee safety and maintenance of biohazardous and chemical waste disposals.

Plans, reviews, develops, and implements the safety program for the central laboratory and branch labs ensuring regulatory compliance with International Air Transport Association (IATA), Federal Department of Transportation (FDOT), Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the National Electric Code (NEC).

Serves as TRAIN administrator, Everbridge administrator and information security for the Bureau. Oversees hazardous waste for the Bureau. Responsible for the following: Hepatitis B Database, and Safety Training Database. Training central and branch lab employees on Bloodborne Pathogens, Chemical Hygiene, Respiratory Protection, Hazard Communication and Fire Prevention. Training also includes the proper and safe handling of chemical and biological agents used in the laboratory. Conducts all annual fit testing for the Respiratory Protection Program. Responds and arranges medical care for all chemical and biological incident exposures and provides first aid and stabilization treatment for all injured employees. Schedules immunizations and maintains all immunization records for staff employees. Conducts Level laboratory training on proper shipping of infectious substances and lab safety in the era of bioterrorism. Maintains a statewide 24 hour/7day a week phone watch to answer questions and solve problems relating to infectious substances shipped to and from the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories. Serves as Chairman of the Laboratory Safety Committee.

Inspects the operations of the Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa laboratories and advises the Chief, Bureau of Public Health Laboratories of any safety violation(s) or potential safety violation(s).

Standardizes procedures for use in Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa laboratories to ensure chemical inventories are maintained and updated on an annual basis. Ensures that all chemical and biological waste is handled and disposed in compliance with all regulations and local ordinances.

Reviews incident and notice of injury reports to ensure follow-up or remedial action is taken. Conducts an investigation (when appropriate) to determine “root cause”. Reports findings to the Chief, Bureau of Laboratories.

Plans, reviews, develops coordinates and implements the security program for the Pearl Street Complex. Coordination involves interaction with Vital Statistics, lab administrators and managers, and Security Guards Service Contract Provider to improve and maintain the security of the Pearl Street Complex.

Provides technical consultation to the Chief, Bureau of Public Health Laboratories as well as the Lab Directors in Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, and other agencies concerning safety regulations affecting laboratory operations.

Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Minimum: Experience in completing investigations, preparing documentation and reports.

Preferred: Experience Coordinating Training.
