What We Are Looking For
We are seeking a dedicated Safety Officer to serve as a lead safety representative over designated yards and/or work locations in our utility construction and vegetation management operations. This field-based supervisory role sits within the safety team, reporting to the Safety Manager, and involves direct oversight of safety compliance in high-risk environments, including working within the minimum approach distance of energized utility lines and critical infrastructure.
This position requires hands-on field leadership, with supervisor duties over crews. Success in the first 12 months looks like: establishing strong safety culture through consistent coaching and assessments, achieving full compliance with OSHA, ANSI, and vendor requirements, reducing incidents through proactive risk mitigation and trend analysis, delivering effective training and briefings, and contributing to zero lost-time incidents while supporting seamless project execution across Puerto Rico.
What You Will Do
- Implement and monitor company safety programs and policies across field operations to ensure full compliance with OSHA, ANSI, vendor, state, and federal standards.
- Work collaboratively within the safety team to complete tasks, program requirements, and assist the Safety Manager as needed.
- Assist in creating safety documents, training materials, and policies tailored to electric utility and construction activities.
- Present engaging training, safety briefings, and presentations to crews and stakeholders.
- Maintain all required certifications and qualifications to safely work within the minimum approach distance of energized utility lines.
- Coach field crews on safe practices for tree trimming, vegetation management, heavy equipment operations, and related activities; identify and address violations through coaching or formal write-ups as required.
- Conduct thorough in-field assessments of crews, equipment, procedures, and job sites to identify hazards and ensure adherence to safe practices.
- Perform risk assessments, apply effective mitigation techniques, and utilize safety software to report, track, and analyze compliance.
- Assist in conducting incident investigations, including root cause analysis, notifications, report creation, and participation in related meetings.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on safety programs, training completion, evaluations, incident trends, and overall performance.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safe tree trimming, vegetation management practices, heavy equipment operations, and applicable industry safety requirements.

Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 5-10 years of experience in construction, utility line clearance, Right-of-Way (ROW) vegetation management operations.
- OSHA 500 certification.
- OSHA 502 certification.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Proven knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, and safety requirements related to tree trimming, equipment operations, and commercial vehicles.
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying environments, including exposure to poisonous plants, noxious vegetation, extreme weather, moving mechanical parts, loud noise, and other field hazards.
Preferred

Qualifications
- Qualified Applicator License (QAL) or Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC).
- TRAQ Certification.
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
- Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B).
- Experience operating light equipment (e.g., chainsaw, blowers, chippers, pole pruners) and heavy equipment.
What to Expect
In this role, expect a highly active, field-oriented position where most time is spent outdoors at project sites, yards, and work locations across Puerto Rico. You will travel frequently to oversee dispersed crews in challenging environments, including extreme heat, humidity, rain, vibration, and exposure to energized lines, heavy machinery, and vegetation. Days often involve early starts for site assessments, crew coaching, safety observations, and hands-on hazard identification amid loud noise and physical demands like walking uneven terrain, climbing, and working at heights or near hazards. You may encounter inclement weather, poisonous plants, and the need for constant vigilance to prevent incidents in high-risk utility work. The role demands resilience, quick decision-making, and strong interpersonal skills to motivate teams and enforce standards firmly yet supportively. While rewarding in its direct impact on worker safety and project success, it requires physical stamina, adaptability to variable schedules, and a commitment to safety-first mindset in a demanding outdoor setting.
Physical Requirements and Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme heat and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
- Ability to work in adverse weather/field conditions, elevated spaces, extreme temperatures, exposure to mechanical parts, wet and/or humid conditions, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and vibration, and loud noise levels.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, etc.
- Commitment to following safety standards and protocols.
