• Responsible for the management and coordination of the Company's Safety and Health (S&H) functions and applicable corporate coordination functions.
• Position requires persistent, dedicated effort to keep abreast of constantly changing regulations.
• Acts as Company expert on laws and regulations relevant to safety and health which pertain to the electric utility industry and in addition maintains a strong working knowledge of regulations associated with the construction industry.
• Assumes a leadership role for the S&H effort in Utility operations and work with all Business Unit leaders in terms of implementation of a continually expanding S&H program.
• Accountable, along with others, for reduction of job-incurred injuries and illnesses to AEP employees and people working for or on behalf of AEP.
• The well-being of the Company's human resources through prevention of work-related injuries and illnesses is paramount.

What you’ll do:

  • Coordinates safety programs including recommendation and communication of, safety program modifications and protective equipment evaluation and use. Conduct and/or monitor periodic safety audits of the S&H efforts, prepare reports of such audits and discuss the results with management.
  • Make recommendations on changing policies, procedures and programs to meet safety objectives which include all appropriate state and federal laws.
  • Keep current with all reporting standards and prepare reports reflecting Company accident and injury experience and recommend alternatives to strengthen accident control measures.
  • Where applicable, oversee contractor S&H oversight program for Business units including recommendations and communication of leading indicators and incident investigation learnings.
  • Conduct and / or monitor periodic safety job site observations of contractors. Manage onboarding process and review prequalification’s to assure compliance with Terms and conditions.
  • Provide a high level of interface with business units in reviewing and formulating Company positions related to the effect of proposed federal, state and OSHA standards on operations and coordinate with appropriate personnel.
  • Advise and consult with the business unit on safety and health regulations with regard to new facilities or modifications of existing facilities.
  • Keep current with federal and state occupational safety and health regulations, including MSHA and OSHA and make recommendations for compliance.
  • Work closely with the line organization to champion continual process improvement by proactively designing and leading development of S&H proactive/preventive activities.
  • Lead investigations and inspections for the purpose of proactively improving hazard control programs and determining the degree of compliance with federal, state and local occupational safety and health regulations.
  • Audit, measure and evaluate these programs for effectiveness.
  • Anticipate, identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices.
  • Analyze, define, and eliminate weaknesses in the safety and health management system.
  • Formulate and coordinate safety and health programs and proposals at all levels of management within the system.
  • Supervises lower-level Safety and Health Coordinators, Sr, and/or Consultants.
  • Administers the Company's job performance review and merit salary programs.
  • Makes recommendations for selection, promotion/demotion, discipline and dismissal of assigned personnel.

What we’re looking for:

Safety & Health Supervisor– (SG8)

  • Bachelor's degree in safety, health, industrial hygiene/health or relevant field of study
  • OR associate degree in relevant field with two years’ experience in related electric utility field operations experience
  • OR High School diploma/GED with 4 years' experience in related electric utility field operations experience.
  • In addition to education requirements listed above, 7 years of Safety & Health or electric utility operations experience is required.

Other Requirements:

  • Supervisory experience is preferred in Generation, Transmission, or Distribution activities.
  • Have knowledge of intervention techniques and experience in instruction and meeting facilitation.
  • Understand principles of organization development and principles of performance improvement methodologies.
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA standards.
  • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, and/or Certified Utility Safety Professional desirable.
  • Proficient oral and written skills.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Position involves daily, as well as occasional overnight travel.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and independence.

Licenses/Certifications: Valid Driver's License.
