Job Location: HGC Columbus - Columbus, OH 43215HGC Construction is seeking an experienced Safety Director to lead safety strategy and execution across our growing Columbus market. This role will oversee the safety program for active projects, partner with project leadership to proactively manage risk, and help reinforce a strong safety culture across field teams and subcontractors.
The Safety Director will work closely with operations, project managers, and executive leadership to ensure projects are planned and executed safely while supporting production and profitability goals.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES
Safety Leadership & Compliance
- Lead and manage the safety program for HGC projects in the Columbus market.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, company, and site-specific safety policies across all job sites.
- Drive progress toward company safety metrics including TRIR and EMR goals.
- Lead incident response and investigations, partnering with field leaders to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for OSHA interactions including inspections, citations, and investigations.
Field Engagement & Risk Prevention
- Visit job sites regularly to evaluate safety practices and proactively identify potential risks.
- Mentor field leadership and crews to reinforce safety ownership and accountability.
- Collaborate with project teams during preconstruction and project startup to plan for safety requirements.
- Ensure Job Hazard Analyses, fall protection plans, confined space permits, excavation documentation, and other safety documentation are completed accurately.
Safety Program Management
- Direct daily activities of safety personnel and prioritize site coverage and inspections.
- Lead safety orientations and ongoing safety training for project teams.
- Facilitate company safety committee meetings and all-hands safety initiatives.
- Review safety reporting and documentation for accuracy and consistency.
- Provide regular safety performance updates and metrics to company leadership.
Collaboration & Culture
- Partner with project managers weekly to review current projects, safety needs, and future planning.
- Build strong relationships with subcontractors to ensure alignment with HGC safety standards.
- Promote a safety-first culture that supports quality work and successful project delivery.
QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, or related field is preferred
- 10+ years of safety experience within commercial construction environments.
- Experience leading safety initiatives across multiple projects or teams.
- Proven ability to work with subcontractors and field leadership to drive safety accountability.
- Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and construction safety best practices.
Preferred Certifications
- OSHA Outreach Trainer Certification
- First Aid / CPR Certification
- Experience with OSHA VPP programs (preferred but not required)
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Knowledge of construction safety documentation and reporting
- Industrial hygiene experience is a plus
