We are seeking a Health and Safety Coordinator to join our team in Burnaby, BC Canada. This role works for our parent company RIC Power Corp. and is crucial in ensuring compliance with safety regulations, promoting a culture of health and safety and 5S within our organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental health and safety practices, particularly within the manufacturing sector, and will be responsible for helping the HSE manager to implement safety programs, conducting training, and maintaining compliance with OHS and 5S program.

You will work closely with management and employees to implement, maintain, and continuously improve safety programs in compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations, environmental regulations, BC Occupational Health & Safety legislation, and facility safety standards.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2–5 years of health, safety, and environmental experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations, BC Occupational Health & Safety legislation, EMA requirements, and occupational health practices.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and delivering EHS training programs and safety orientations.
  • Strong understanding of hazard assessments, incident investigations, corrective action management, and safety auditing processes.
  • Experience with WHMIS 2015, SDS management, and chemical handling programs.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and actively drive corrective actions and workplace improvements without close supervision.
  • Strong written communication and report-writing skills, including preparation of safety procedures, incident reports, audit findings, and training materials.
  • Proficiency in root cause analysis techniques such as 5 Whys and fishbone analysis.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex safety information clearly and effectively to employees at all levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable WorkSafeBC regulations, environmental regulations, BC Occupational Health & Safety legislation, BC Fire Code requirements, and company safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, implementing, and updating health, safety, environmental, and 5S programs, procedures, safe work practices, and safe job procedures.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and non-compliance issues; take immediate corrective action where possible, assign follow-up actions, and track all corrective actions through to completion.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, injuries, and near-misses using root cause analysis techniques (e.g., 5 Whys, fishbone analysis); prepare detailed reports outlining findings, corrective actions, and recommendations for improvement.
  • Champion and maintain 5S and housekeeping standards throughout the facility by leading workplace organization efforts, coaching employees on standards, conducting audits, and ensuring work areas remain clean, organized, and safe.
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver safety orientations and training programs for employees and contractors on topics including WorkSafeBC regulations, occupational health practices, WHMIS, emergency response, and safe work procedures.
  • Maintain all training records, schedules, materials, certifications, and compliance documentation related to safety programs.
  • Manage the facility WHMIS program, including maintaining current chemical inventories and Safety Data Sheets (SDS), ensuring proper labeling and storage, and delivering WHMIS training.
  • Monitor regulatory updates and changes to WorkSafeBC, environmental, and related safety legislation; communicate changes and update procedures, signage, and training materials accordingly.
  • Coordinate and participate in Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) activities, including attending meetings, preparing documentation, tracking corrective actions, supporting workplace inspections, and promoting employee participation in health and safety initiatives.
  • Serve as the designated Occupational First Aid Attendant, maintaining certification, responding to workplace injuries or medical incidents, and ensuring first aid supplies and stations remain stocked and compliant.
  • Manage PPE inventory and usage, including ordering, inspections, fitting checks, replacement of worn equipment, and ensuring proper employee use.
  • Coordinate and monitor facility maintenance activities to ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations, building codes, fire codes, and environmental requirements.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness planning, evacuation procedures, emergency drills, and facility emergency response coordination.
  • Ensure proper safety signage, floor markings, pedestrian walkways, traffic controls, and hazard communication systems are maintained throughout the facility.
  • Coordinate corrective actions related to facility deficiencies, environmental concerns, structural hazards, and unsafe working conditions.
  • Facilitate communication regarding workplace safety concerns and support continuous improvement initiatives across the organization.
