Description
Reporting to the Vice President Corporate Real Estate, Safety, Compliance and Loss Prevention the Safety and Compliance Specialist is responsible for overseeing safety and regulatory compliance across warehouse, transportation, and Last Mile operations. This position requires extensive knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations, as well as experience developing and implementing warehouse safety programs.
Will work closely with Operations, Transportation, HR, Recruiting, Facilities, and third-party carrier partners to ensure compliance with regulatory and Company requirements, identify operational risks, investigate incidents, and implement corrective actions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Oversee compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and applicable state and local regulations.
- Monitor driver and carrier qualification requirements, including MVRs, DQ files, insurance, background checks, and required certifications.
- Monitor third-party carrier compliance and safety performance.
- Conduct facility and operational safety inspections and risk assessments.
- Develop, implement, and maintain warehouse safety programs, policies, SOPs, and training.
- Identify safety hazards involving docks, racking, forklifts, trailers, pedestrian traffic, PPE, housekeeping, and other warehouse operations.
- Investigate accidents, injuries, near misses, and transportation incidents and develop corrective actions.
- Track safety and compliance issues through resolution.
- Conduct safety training and communicate safety expectations to employees, drivers, helpers, and carrier partners.
- Support regulatory audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
- Monitor safety trends and provide recommendations to management.
- Partner with Operations and HR on safety-related employee and carrier issues.
- Maintain accurate safety, compliance, training, and incident records.
- Stay current on regulatory changes and ensure Company procedures are updated accordingly.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
- Extensive knowledge of DOT and FMCSA compliance requirements.
- Experience developing and managing warehouse safety programs.
- Strong understanding of OSHA and workplace safety requirements.
- Experience conducting safety inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
- Ability to develop and implement corrective action plans.
- Strong communication, organizational, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively with Operations, HR, Facilities, Transportation, and senior leadership.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Quality focus.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work effectively in a cross-functional team capacity.
- Strong verbal /written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
Required Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Logistics, Transportation, Business, or related field preferred.
- Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience in Safety, Compliance, Transportation, Logistics, Warehouse Operations, or a related field required.
- Experience in Last Mile Operations a plus.
- Experience in 3PL, Last Mile, logistics, distribution, or transportation.
- Experience working with independent contractors or third-party carrier partners.
- Experience with FMCSA/SMS, driver qualification, MVR monitoring, and carrier compliance.
- Safety or compliance certification such as CSP, ASP, or CHST a plus.
