Job Description

This position offers a hybrid work model and will include up to 25% travel

On-site work location is the Ruan Campus located downtown Des Moines

The Safety Compliance Specialist works independently and as a team member to ensure compliance of the organization in areas of the FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, EPA, company policies and other rules and regulations. The Compliance Specialist collaborates with operations leaders, local management, drivers, and other safety-sensitive team members to provide support and guidance, training, coaching, individual and team assessments and audits, maintain accurate and up to date compliance information, and track and analyze data to improve safety and compliance performance.

Responsibilities:

Carrying out the Company's organizational values and operating in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and Company policies are required functions. Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Analyze reports, investigate issues, solve problems, and determine compliant options related to electronic logging functions, hours of service (HOS) compliance, and state/federal regulated documents required for CDL driver compliance. Make independent decisions that impact overall company compliance with state/federal laws, company policies, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Advise and coach drivers, safety sensitive employees, management staff, and operation leaders in the area of regulatory compliance. This includes but is not limited to: hours of service, drug and alcohol testing, driver physical, endorsement expirations, motor vehicle record monitoring, training, and documentation.
  • Ensure adherence to safety and compliance policies through regular operational audits and compliance reviews.
  • Serve as company's subject matter experts in all areas of state and federal DOT, FMCSA, and other regulatory/governing body rules and regulations. Staying abreast on new and changing regulations.
  • Work in collaboration with Claims, Legal, Human Resources, and other departments to support investigations and retain records related to potential litigation.
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as required.

Qualifications

JOB REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Associate, Vocational, or Technical Degree or equivalent work experience.

Course(s) of Study: Business, Logistics, Accounting, Communications, Safety, or related courses

Experience: 1-2 years

Type of Experience: Truck Transportation, Safety, or Regulatory Communications preferred

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must use independent judgement and decision making as it relates to federally mandated regulations using incoming information from Ruan team members. Follow HIPPA regulation with team members information and utilize confidentiality during potential investigations. proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required. Computer skills with electronic logging systems preferred but not required. Requires accuracy and detail orientated skills. Must have strong communication skills (non-confrontational and diplomatic approach) phone, in person, and written communication. Must have ability to manage multiple projects. Requires planning, organizational, analytical, independent problem-solving, and time management skills. Needs coaching and mentoring skills. Must have knowledge of, and be able to be conversant about federal and state DOT, FMCSA, and other regulatory rules and statutes and Canada Hours of Service regulations as they apply to assigned operations, commodity, or state law.

Physical Demands Of The Job:

Team member must be able to twist, bend, pull, push and lift up to 25 pounds. May work in excess of 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, as required to perform essential functions. Team member will be required to stand, walk, sit, use fingers, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Team member will present a neat, clean appearance of self, and use professional business etiquette and language. Must be able to operate office equipment; including telephone, copy/fax machine, personal computer, have reasonable accuracy and speed on ten key skills or/and keyboarding.
