Job Description

Who We Are

Since opening in 1998, The Tech Interactive has been an integral part of the San Francisco Bay area and is proud to serve families and young people through hands-on activities, experimental labs, and design challenge experiences.

Here at The Tech our mission is to inspire the innovator in everyone! We are a team of diverse individuals committed to creating learning experiences that empower young folks to innovate with creativity, curiosity, and compassion. We believe that technology is leading and transforming lives all over the world and we want to help develop the next generation of problem-solvers.

If you join our team, we know you will have a fulfilling and rewarding role focused on giving back to our community, especially those that have been historically marginalized and underserved.

The Safety and Security Supervisor is a hands-on supervisory role responsible for overseeing the daily workflow, schedules, and assignments of security personnel. This position ensures seamless access control, facility patrols, and rapid incident response, while directly training new hires on safety and security protocols.

Collaborating closely with the Safety and Security Operations Manager, this role continuously monitors and adapts daily safety procedures to maintain a secure environment. Serving as the primary operational liaison between the contract security provider and organization leadership, this position balances strict compliance with a welcoming, community-centric approach suitable for both non-profit and corporate tech environments. This non-exempt role reports to the Safety and Security Operations Manager.

Responsibilities

Operational Safety & Facility Protection

  • Oversee day-to-day physical security operations across all program sites, community hubs, and administrative offices.
  • Monitor guest check-in systems, manage facility access controls, and conduct routine perimeter and safety patrols.
  • Manage security technology systems, including CCTV surveillance, electronic access systems, fire alarms, and visitor logs.
  • Coordinate safety protocols for special events, community outreach initiatives, and donor functions.

Team Leadership & Staff Engagement

  • Supervise, schedule, and evaluate site security personnel, contracted guards, and volunteer safety monitors.
  • Conduct regular safety briefings and hands-on training for general staff, interns, and volunteers in de-escalation, emergency evacuation, active threat response, and personal safety.
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment that balances visible safety with community accessibility.

Crisis Management & Emergency Response

  • Serve as the primary on-site responder during security breaches, medical emergencies, mental health crises, or environmental threats.
  • Help update, test, and implement Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for fires, severe weather, lockdowns, and medical incidents.
  • Write detailed, objective incident reports and present risk analyses to management to help prevent future safety issues.

External Partnerships & Compliance

  • Serve as the primary liaison to local emergency services (police, fire, EMS), advocating for non-escalatory, community-sensitive responses when assistance is required.
  • Ensure facility compliance with OSHA standards, local fire codes, and organizational insurance liability mandates.

Requirements and Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED required. An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, Business Administration, or a related field is highly preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in physical security, corporate security, or loss prevention, with a proven track record of supervising team members or shift operations. An equivalent combination of advanced education and field experience will also be considered.
  • Solid understanding of basic OSHA regulations, workers’ compensation workflows, occupational health/safety requirements, and emergency first-aid protocols.
  • Knowledge of the legal boundaries surrounding asset protection, loss prevention, and public/private property rights.
  • Proficient in operating modern security databases and platforms (e.g., Access Control Systems, CCTV/VMS monitoring, digital incident reporting software, and visitor management systems).
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with internal cross-functional departments and diverse public visitors, maintaining absolute confidentiality regarding sensitive materials and situations.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with a focus on modern de-escalation techniques and customer-service-oriented security.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a minimum of one (1) year of clean driving experience.
  • Possession of (or ability to obtain prior to hire) required state/local security guard registration (e.g., California Guard Card or regional equivalent).
  • Current certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire) in First Aid/CPR/AED.

Working Conditions and Schedule

  • This is an on-site role that regularly works weekends and must be available by phone for emergencies.
  • Occasionally lift or carry up to 40 lbs; climb stairs, ramps, or ladders occasionally during the shift
