The purpose of this job is to support the operation and maintenance of breeding and phenotyping greenhouse and screenhouse facilities in Bambey, Senegal. The position will provide technical support to plant breeding, plant pathology, disease screening, and crop improvement activities while ensuring that greenhouse facilities operate efficiently, safely, and according to established protocols. Of modern breeding strategies to accelerate genetic gain and enhance the impact of crop improvement programs.
Key Responsabilities:
He/She will conduct activities with specific tasks that include, but are not limited to:
1. Greenhouse Operations Management
• Manage the daily operations of the greenhouse and soil preparation areas.
• Support efficient workflow implementation and access control procedures.
• Operate and monitor greenhouse environmental conditions, irrigation systems, and plant health.
• Support greenhouse, screenhouse, and nursery activities including seedling establishment, transplanting, plant maintenance, and harvesting.
2. Research Support
• Support research activities involving sorghum, pearl millet, and groundnut.
• Assist with greenhouse and field research operations as required.
• Provide experimental support and maintain related activity records.
3. Soil and Growing Media Management
• Manage soil preparation, substrate mixing, sterilization, and potting activities.
• Ensure proper disposal of used growing media and plant residues.
4. Equipment and Infrastructure Maintenance
• Ensure all greenhouse machines and equipment are serviced and operational.
• Perform routine maintenance of greenhouse infrastructure, including minor plumbing repairs and water leakages.
Diagnose basic electrical and equipment faults and recommend corrective actions.
5. Inventory and Resource Management
• Maintain accurate inventories of greenhouse supplies, substrates, pots, equipment, and other stock items.
• Keep accurate records of stock usage and availability.
6.Safety, Biosafety, and Sanitation Compliance
• Implement and enforce safety, biosafety, sanitation, and waste disposal procedures.
• Support compliance with greenhouse safety guidelines and maintain access records.
7. Record Keeping and Reporting
• Maintain accurate records of greenhouse operations, maintenance activities, sanitation logs, inventory, and research support activities.
• Report operational, equipment, or plant health concerns for timely action.
8. Any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Requirements
The successful candidate will:
• Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Horticulture, Plant Science, Agricultural Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Agricultural Technology, or related field.
• At least one year of relevant experience in greenhouse, nursery, or agricultural research facilities.
• Practical experience in greenhouse operations is highly desirable.
• Experience in plant propagation, breeding, disease screening, or crop research is an advantage.
• Knowledge of greenhouse operations, soil sterilization, irrigation systems, and plant management.
• Basic plumbing and electrical troubleshooting skills.
• Strong organizational, record-keeping, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
Working knowledge of English and French is highly desirable.
