Position: Routing Specialist

Department: Transportation

Reports To: Director of Transportation

Classification: Classified / Full-Time

Work Year: 12 Months

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Range: $40,000�$48,000 annually

POSITION PURPOSE

The Routing Specialist supports the safe, efficient, and reliable transportation of Lafayette School Corporation students by developing, maintaining, and adjusting student transportation routes and related routing information. The position works closely with the Director of Transportation, transportation office staff, school personnel, drivers, families, and other district departments to ensure accurate routing information and responsive transportation services.

The Routing Specialist is expected to maintain accurate student and transportation data, identify opportunities to improve route efficiency, respond effectively to changes throughout the school year, and provide professional customer service to students, families, employees, and community members.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Routing Specialist shall:

  • Develop, maintain, review, and modify daily student transportation routes and bus stops using district-approved routing software.
  • Assign students to appropriate bus routes and stops based on student address, school assignment, transportation eligibility, and district procedures.
  • Maintain accurate route, stop, student, and vehicle information within transportation software and related district systems.
  • Review routing information regularly to identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary travel time, balance student loads, and maximize available transportation resources.
  • Process student transportation additions, deletions, address changes, school changes, and other routing updates in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate routing changes with bus drivers, transportation office staff, schools, families, and other appropriate personnel.
  • Provide drivers with accurate and current route information, including stop locations, student assignments, route times, and approved route changes.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of transportation plans at the beginning of each school year and during significant enrollment, program, or boundary changes.
  • Monitor route capacity and identify concerns related to overcrowding, excessive ride times, scheduling conflicts, unsafe stop locations, or operational inefficiencies.
  • Assist with establishing and reviewing bus stop locations with consideration for student safety, traffic conditions, accessibility, operational efficiency, and district procedures.
  • Communicate professionally with parents and guardians regarding transportation assignments, route changes, bus stops, and general transportation questions.
  • Investigate routing concerns and work collaboratively with the Director of Transportation to identify appropriate solutions.
  • Coordinate with school offices to verify student enrollment, addresses, school assignments, and other information necessary for accurate transportation services.
  • Work collaboratively with district personnel responsible for student information systems to maintain accurate and consistent student transportation data.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality of student, family, employee, and district information.
  • Prepare reports, route documentation, ridership information, and other transportation data as requested by the Director of Transportation.
  • Assist the Transportation Department during arrival and dismissal periods and other high-volume operational times as needed.
  • Respond to transportation changes and operational needs that may arise because of weather, road closures, construction, emergencies, staffing changes, or other unforeseen circumstances.
  • Provide backup assistance for other Transportation Department office functions when needed.
  • Participate in department meetings, professional development, training, and other activities as assigned.
  • Follow all Lafayette School Corporation policies, procedures, transportation guidelines, and applicable state and federal requirements.
  • Assign sub drivers to routes as needed
  • Maintain sub list when drivers call off.
  • Perform other duties reasonably related to the position as assigned by the Director of Transportation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently possess a CDL Class B license or willing to attain within 6 months.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively to changing circumstances.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide professional and courteous customer service, including during challenging or high-pressure situations.
  • Proficiency with computers, databases, spreadsheets, email, and other office technology.
  • Ability to learn and effectively use transportation routing software and district student information systems.
  • Ability to interpret addresses, maps, route information, schedules, and transportation data.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with drivers, transportation staff, administrators, school personnel, students, families, and community members.
  • Successful completion of all required employment background checks.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in K�12 transportation, routing, logistics, dispatching, scheduling, or a related field.
  • Experience using student transportation routing software.
  • Experience working with student information systems.
  • Knowledge of the Lafayette community, local streets, school locations, and traffic patterns.
  • Experience analyzing routes, schedules, logistics, or operational data.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Think logically and solve routing and scheduling problems.
  • Analyze multiple variables when developing or modifying transportation routes.
  • Maintain accuracy while processing large volumes of student and transportation information.
  • Anticipate how changes to one route, stop, or schedule may affect other transportation operations.
  • Communicate complicated transportation information in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Exercise sound judgment and maintain professionalism when responding to concerns or complaints.
  • Work effectively under deadlines, particularly during the beginning of the school year and periods of significant transportation change.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and consistent availability to support daily Transportation Department operations.

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

The position generally requires:

  • Extended periods of sitting and working at a computer.
  • Frequent use of a keyboard, mouse, telephone, and other office equipment.
  • Regular verbal and written communication.
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of office materials or equipment.
  • Occasional travel within the district to review routes, stops, road conditions, or transportation concerns.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced office environment where interruptions and rapidly changing priorities may occur.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • 12-month position
  • Full-time
  • Annual Salary Range: $40,000�$48,000
  • Final salary placement will be based on experience, qualifications, and the needs of Lafayette School Corporation.
  • Work schedule and hours are established by the Director of Transportation based on department needs.
  • Employment is subject to applicable Lafayette School Corporation policies, procedures, and employment guidelines.
