Job Description

Operational Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently operate rollers, compactors, and other assigned compaction equipment for earthmoving and mining activities.
  • Compact soil, gravel, aggregate, fill material, road bases, and other materials according to project specifications and required density or compaction standards.
  • Prepare and compact haul roads, access roads, work pads, ramps, embankments, stockpile areas, and other designated work areas.
  • Follow site plans, supervisor instructions, required grades, lift thicknesses, and compaction procedures.
  • Operate equipment using appropriate speed, vibration, amplitude, and number of passes according to material and site conditions.
  • Monitor ground conditions and identify areas requiring additional compaction, moisture adjustment, grading, or corrective work.
  • Coordinate with dozer, grader, loader, water truck, dump truck, and other equipment operators to ensure efficient earthmoving and compaction activities.
  • Maintain appropriate working distances and safe operating practices when working near other heavy equipment and personnel.
  • Conduct daily pre-start inspections and operational checks of the roller and report any defects, leaks, abnormal noises, or mechanical issues.
  • Maintain the machine clean and in good working condition and report maintenance requirements promptly.
  • Follow designated traffic routes, work areas, and site access procedures.
  • Complete required production, equipment, and operational records accurately.
  • Support general earthmoving activities as directed by the Operations Supervisor or Foreman, within the operator's level of competence and authorization.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Attend daily pre-start meetings, toolbox talks, and safety briefings as required.
  • Conduct visual safety and equipment checks before commencing operations.
  • Operate the roller only within authorized areas and in accordance with site traffic management plans and safety procedures.
  • Maintain awareness of personnel, light vehicles, heavy equipment, edges, slopes, embankments, overhead hazards, and changing ground conditions.
  • Follow EPSA safety policies, procedures, risk controls, and safe operating practices at all times.
  • Use the required PPE and ensure all safety equipment fitted to the machine is functional and properly used.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment defects, near misses, incidents, or accidents to the appropriate supervisor.

Environmental Responsibilities

  • Comply with EPSA environmental policies, procedures, and site requirements.
  • Operate equipment in a manner that minimizes unnecessary environmental impact, including excessive dust, noise, fuel consumption, and disturbance of surrounding areas.
  • Report fuel, oil, hydraulic, or other fluid leaks immediately.
  • Prevent unnecessary damage to drainage systems, watercourses, vegetation, and designated environmental protection areas.
  • Maintain clean and orderly work areas and dispose of waste in designated locations.

Qualifications

  • Secondary education or equivalent.
  • Valid heavy equipment operator license or certification, where required by local regulations.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating rollers, compactors, or similar heavy equipment.
  • Basic ability to read and understand operational instructions, safety procedures, and site documentation.
  • Basic understanding of soil compaction principles and safe equipment operation.
  • Previous experience in open-pit mining or large-scale earthmoving operations.
  • Training in mine site safety and traffic management.
  • Familiarity with road construction, haul road maintenance, embankments, and earthworks.
  • Experience working with GPS or machine guidance systems is an advantage.
