The Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Assist, is seeking Surgical Assistants with laparoscopic experience who are also interested in receiving training in robotic surgery. Training for robotics will be provided both initially and on an ongoing basis.

This position will have a primary base at the BCH site, with opportunities to assist at EGH as needed. While participation in the on‑call roster is possible, taking call is not mandatory for this specific role.

Prior surgical assisting experience is preferred but not required. Candidates should demonstrate excellent communication skills and a strong desire to contribute within a multidisciplinary team environment. Remuneration is fee‑for‑service, supplemented by an on‑call stipend when applicable.

Accountabilities

The Surgical Assistant provides direct support to the surgeon by:

  • Managing instruments, retracting tissue, suctioning, suturing and cutting sutures
  • Maintains a sterile field and anticipates the surgeon’s needs throughout the procedure
  • Monitors the patient’s status and communicates concerns to the surgical team
  • Operates or assists with specialized surgical equipment as needed

Qualifications

  • Certificate of Registration to practice from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
  • Prior surgical assisting experience is preferred but not a requirement
  • Excellent communication skills in English (additional languages are considered an asset as we serve a highly diverse population)
