TxDOT's Austin District is looking for ONE (1) Roadway ( Transportation) Maintenance Technician I, II or III, based out of our Lockhart Maintenance Office in Lockhart, TX. This position will perform routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, routine and contract maintenance inspection, bridge inspection and record keeping, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, assisting the public during emergency situations, and training other employees.

You may qualify for a one-time recruitment bonus up to $5000 if you have a Class “A” CDL License (preferably with no transmission restrictions) at time of hire. You must maintain 12-months of continuous employment with TxDOT and meet all other conditions. This position performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for a Roadway (Transportation) Maintenance Technician I, II, and III include:

• Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
• Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
• Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
• Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
• Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Additional duties for a Roadway (Transportation) Maintenance Tech II and III include:

• Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
• Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
• Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
• Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
• Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards
• Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
• Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
• Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
• Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
• Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
• Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

Additional duties for a Roadway (Transportation) Maintenance Tech III include:

• Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
• May serve as lead worker.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

No education required.

Experience for a Roadway (Transportation) Maintenance Tech (TMT):

• TMT I = No experience required

• TMT II = 1 YEAR* transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.

• TMT III = 2 YEARS* transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience.

*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

• Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 1 YEAR calendar days from date of employment.

• Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
• Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
