We’re on the lookout for an experienced Roading Department Manager to join our Gisborne team. Gisborne is known for its welcoming culture, vibrant community spirit, golden beaches, and iconic sunrises – all set in a region rich in history and natural beauty.

In this role, you’ll lead the roading department delivering construction, stabilisation, and rehabilitation of pavements across our network, making sure every project is delivered safely, on time, on budget, and to the standards our clients and communities expect.

You’ll be the go-to leader for your department, keeping day-to-day operations running smoothly while staying sharp on performance, safety, and financial outcomes. It’s a diverse, hands-on role where you can shape the future of the department, build strong relationships, and drive smart improvements right across operations.

Ngā tino kawenga mahi | Key role responsibilities

  • Lead and manage pavement construction, stabilising and rehabilitation projects from planning to completion.

  • Oversee project programming, resourcing, budgeting and reporting.

  • Ensure all works comply with relevant standards, specifications, contracts and safety requirements.

  • Drive quality, innovation and continuous improvement in pavement construction and rehab methodologies.

  • Develop, coach and support a high-performing roading team and subcontractor base.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, clients, consultants and contractors to achieve programme outcomes.

Kei te kimi mātou i tētahi e whai ana i ēnei pūkenga | We’re looking for someone with

  • Significant experience in roading and civil construction, including pavement construction, stabilising, and rehabilitation.

  • Strong technical understanding of pavement design, construction methodologies, stabilisation techniques, and asset management principles.

  • Proven leadership and people management experience in a construction/roading environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, programmes, and multiple concurrent projects.

  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and relationship-building skills.

  • Sound understanding of health and safety legislation and best practice.

  • Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline. (or equivalent experience)

  • Professional membership (for example, Engineering NZ / IPENZ, or similar) is an advantage.

  • Full, clean NZ driver’s licence.
