POSITION FUNCTION

Operate a variety of construction related power equipment and vehicles.

KEY DUTIES

Assist with entry level tasks related to construction and maintenance of asphalt and concrete road surfaces, such as preparing cuts prior to basing, pouring of concrete, and ensuring road edges are clean; prepare job sites; shovel gravel and base materials; assist in levelling asphalt, provide blocks and wedges to Leadhand in order to set castings. Padman for excavation equipment.

Operates various equipment such as breaker, cracksealer, vibratory tamper, jackhammer, compactor, cut-off saw, cart saw, air compressor, power-washer, and coring machine; operate a vehicle to transport equipment and materials.

Perform pre- and post- trip inspections by checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses, and lights; perform daily inspection of power equipment; report repairs needed and damage to supervisor and mechanics shop; check first aid and safety equipment; fill out daily equipment logs.

Perform related duties where qualified.

INDEPENDENCE

Work is assigned and reviewed by supervisor.

Problems are referred to supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

Lift and move heavy materials and equipment. (frequent)

Shovel, rake hot asphalt and dig. (frequent)

Operate jackhammers, cut off saws, plate tampers and compactors. (occasional)

Mental Effort:

Normal.

Visual/Auditory Effort:

Normal.

Work Environment:

Work outside in all weather conditions. (continuous)

Exposure to equipment noise. (frequent)

Work on construction sites. (continuous)

Work in close proximity to moving traffic. (frequent)

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Understand and carry out job related instructions.

Use hand tools and power equipment.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Work safely on job sites.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

Grade 10.

Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence.

Experience:

1 year of related experience.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
