As a Perinatal Educator, you will support new parents during the pregnancy and postpartum period. Your education offers an important "first impression" of parenthood for expectant families, helping them prepare for birth and the changes that come afterward. In this position, you will collaborate with fellow caregivers to maintain the most up to date content for classes and support community efforts to promote the health and wellness of women and children.

A caregiver in this position works PRN (as needed) day/evening rotating shifts.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Support and instruct expectant mothers and their support, post delivered parents in the neonatal period and the community in a structured classroom program using an interactive teaching style.
  • Serve as a resource person to support the Cleveland Clinic Birthing and Neonatal Services and the community.
  • Transfer information from the class curriculum to participants using creative techniques.
  • Utilize current information and knowledge to share with colleagues and keep curriculum current.
  • Facilitate interactive teaching methods.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to pregnant and parenting mothers, fathers, and other family members in a supportive and interactive teaching environment.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop a plan of care to help mothers reach their breastfeeding goals.
  • Provide discharge teaching, including resources available in the outpatient area.
  • Support Baby-Friendly Hospital tenets and the 10 Steps to successful breastfeeding, including the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitute.
  • Support Nurse Professional Development Specialists onboard new caregivers with required breastfeeding clinical skills as required by Baby-Friendly accreditation.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Professional Nursing
  • Current state Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in designated nursing specialty areas
  • Certification or other documented education/training in expertise
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
  • One year of experience or certification/demonstrated knowledge in the specialty area of instruction

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Experience as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC)

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures
