Position Summary

The RN, Pediatrics provides compassionate, developmentally appropriate nursing care to infants, children, adolescents, and adults with a wide range of medical and surgical needs. This role conducts thorough assessments, monitors changes in clinical status, and delivers evidence-based nursing interventions to support stabilization, recovery, and family-centered care. Working collaboratively with pediatricians, specialists, therapists, and ancillary team members, the RN helps coordinate individualized care plans and promote continuity across the care experience. As part of a supportive, team-oriented pediatric environment, this position promotes safety, comfort, and positive health outcomes through clear communication, patient and family education, and attentive clinical practice.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct age-appropriate assessments, monitor patient conditions, and evaluate responses to treatments and therapies.
• Administer medications, perform procedures, manage IV access, and carry out physician-ordered interventions safely and accurately.
• Provide education and emotional support to patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, care plans, and discharge instructions.
• Document assessments, interventions, and communication in the electronic health record according to regulatory and organizational standards.
• Collaborate with providers and care team members to coordinate care, participate in interdisciplinary rounds, and communicate patient needs.
• Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment and respond promptly to changes in pediatric patient status or emergent conditions.

QualificationsLicenses and Certifications Required

• Current or temporary RN license in North Dakota or compact RN licensure.
• BLS certification required within orientation period.
• Specialty certification in area of practice is desirable.

Educational Requirements

• RN program as evidenced by licensure.

Experience Requirements

• Hospital experience is preferred, but not required.

Special Skills or Training Requirements

• As required by specific units.

Physical Requirements

The Pediatric RN frequently stands, walks, bends, and reaches while providing hands-on care to patients of varying ages and sizes. The role requires the ability to lift, support, and assist children safely, including during transfers or procedures. Fine motor skills, visual acuity, and auditory awareness are essential for medication administration, monitoring equipment, and recognizing subtle clinical changes.

Environmental Requirements

Work occurs in a pediatric inpatient environment with exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, cleaning agents, and frequent noise from equipment and patient activity. The RN must adhere to infection-control protocols, utilize appropriate PPE, and work effectively in a fast-paced setting with frequent interruptions. The environment requires emotional resilience and sensitivity when supporting children and families experiencing stress, illness, or uncertainty.
