The Cardiothoracic Surgery Department offers virtually every type of cardiac surgery, providing caregivers with the opportunity to work in a highly specialized and advanced clinical environment. As an RN, you will work directly with cardiothoracic surgeons and the Cardiac Pre-Op team to help ensure patients are fully cleared and prepared for surgery while delivering an exceptional patient experience.
This role serves as the final step in the pre-operative process for cardiac surgery patients. Responsibilities include reviewing patient histories, interpreting pathology reports and diagnostic results, initiating additional testing when needed, communicating pre-surgical instructions to patients, and collaborating closely with surgeons to address concerns prior to surgery. This is a highly detailed, patient-facing position that requires strong critical thinking, independent decision-making, and excellent communication skills.
A caregiver in this position works full-time| 10-hour shifts|7:00am—5:30pm| no weekends or holidays.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Provide professional nursing care in an ambulatory setting.
Assess health status, complete nursing assessments, perform telephonetriage,andestablishcare plans.
Administermedicationand treatments.
Initiate CPR and other emergency measures.
Notify the physician and/or Licensed Independent Provider (LIP) of abnormal findings.
Assistwith specialized diagnostic procedures, therapeuticprocedures,and specialized patient care equipment.
Develop, evaluate,adaptand document health education and provide it to patients and families.
Cover other nursing roles within the department.
Travel within the region to support physician clinics and surgical procedures, as needed.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate from an accreditedSchool ofNursing(Diploma,ADNor BSN program)
Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
Basic Life Support (BLS)Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)or American Red Cross
In areas performing moderate sedation procedures and/or cardiac stress testing, must have current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) Certification within six months of hire
One yearof recent experience as an RNORLPN, MedicalAssistantand/or other unlicensed clinical healthcare experienceif applicant is a current Cleveland Clinic caregiver in an ambulatory setting transferring into an RN role butremainingin the same current ambulatory Cleveland Clinic setting ORa current Cleveland Clinic caregiver in a clinical role within the same specialty area transferring into an ambulatory area
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Bachelor’sofScience inNursing (BSN)
PreviousRN experience with a strong cardiac care background; CVICU experience
Ability to review and interpret patient reports, recognize abnormal findings, and understand pathology outside normal ranges
Strong clinical judgment skills with the ability toidentifyabnormal readings and promptly notify the surgeon whenappropriate
Experience collaborating with all members of the patient care team throughout the pre-assessment process
Ability to thrive in a highly detailed and comprehensive clinical role
Demonstrated excellent workethic, professionalism, and accountability
Nursing backgrounds include CVICU and Cardiac Stepdown units; candidates with extensive ICU and/or HVTI experience
Physical Requirements:
Requires full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
May requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects.
Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
