Position Summary: The Risk Engineer will work within the Risk Management department and will report to the Corporate Risk Manager. This position will serve as Hoffman’s internal risk consultant, partnering with project leadership, risk management, and carrier risk engineering teams to identify, assess, and mitigate risk while improving project outcomes. The Risk Engineer will serve as a technical resource connecting Operations, Risk, Insurance, Claims, Accounting, Purchasing, Safety, Quality, Legal, IT/Data Systems, and Hoffman’s carrier partners. This position will be fully in person at either our Seattle, WA or Portland, OR offices.

Salary Range: $110,000 - $125,000 DOE

Essential Responsibilities:

• Partner with Project Executives, Project Managers, Superintendents, and Operations leadership to evaluate emerging project risks.
• Participate in Project HPEPs (Hoffman Project Execution Plans) for select projects and provide risk-based input and guidance on project execution strategies, procurement approaches, subcontractor packaging, staffing plans, quality planning, schedule risks, and contingency plans.
• Provide guidance and support on high-risk project situations, including subcontractor or performance issues, financial distress, quality concerns, schedule recovery efforts, major claims, staffing challenges, procurement risks, and other material project exposures.
• Interface with project teams on projects enrolled in SDI to identify real time project risks and overall health of enrolled subcontractors.
• Identify lessons learned and best practices that can be applied across the company.
• Review and audit active SDI programs for compliance with recommended Risk Mitigation Plans and best practices.
• Support project and subcontractor risk reviews.
• Support major subcontractor referral evaluations as well as gather required data from project teams for SDI carriers.
• Support the SDI Committee with data, analytics, and recommendations.
• Participate in carrier operational reviews and underwriting discussions.
• Serve as Hoffman’s primary liaison with SDI carrier Risk Engineering teams and collaborate proactively with carrier Risk Engineers to identify and implement industry best practices.
• Identify emerging trends, lessons learned, and risk mitigation strategies from across the construction industry.
• Review carrier observations, recommendations, and benchmarking data and help translate them into practical improvements.
• Participate in project reviews, operational reviews, and risk engineering visits with carrier representatives.
• Leverage carrier expertise and industry data to strengthen subcontractor prequalification, project controls, quality management, operational best practices, and loss prevention practices.
• Analyze significant claims and loss events.
• Track project teams’ compliance with referral conditions.
• Track implementation of lessons learned.
• Develop dashboards, KPIs, and executive reporting
• Monitor SDI, CCIP, and other insurance program performance.
• Identify emerging risks and opportunities for improvement.
• Support long-term SDI performance initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

Position Related Skills:

• Experience in the construction industry with a construction operations background is preferred.
• Experience as a prior SDI risk engineer is preferred.
• Experience with construction contracts and a strong understanding of traditional construction insurance lines is preferred.
• Must have a working knowledge of basic software; Windows, all Microsoft Office applications: Word, Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, MS Teams, and a general understanding of working within a computer network.
• Ability to communicate effectively with teammates, executive leadership, project teams, brokers, carriers, and external consultants.
• Receive and maintain confidential and sensitive information.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and administrative skills.
• Strong written, verbal, and electronic communication skills.
• Must conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times.
• Detail orientated with the ability to effectively prioritize duties and multitask.
• Must be a strong team player, self-starter, flexible and be able to work well with a variety of personalities and minimal instruction.
• Must be able to work independently, solve problems, and follow through on all assignments.
• Must possess strong organizational and computer use skills and have a high level of competency to read/write/speak English, interpret construction related documentation, and communicate with coworkers.

Professional Experience and Education:

• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in risk management, risk assessment, or a related field, preferably within the construction or engineering industry.
• A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management or a related technical field.
• Deep familiarity with the construction lifecycle, project scheduling, subcontractor management, and safety standards.

• Standing/Walking/Sitting: Workday is a combination of standing, walking, and sitting.
• Must be able to climb stairs: 5% of day.
• Hands/Arms: Constant use of hands/fingers for mouse/keyboard/computer use.
• Sight: Visual acuity in near, mid, and far range vision. Color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, hand/eye coordination.
• Hearing: Sufficient to hear conversational levels in person and over the telephone.
• Speech: Sufficient to make oneself heard in person, speak in front of groups, and be understood over the telephone.
• Lift/Carry: Up to 25Ibs – Minimal.
• Bending/Twisting: Minimal.
• Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: Minimal.
• Constant mental alertness, accuracy, and attention to detail required.
• Must be able to work independently, make decisions, plan and organize work, and follow through on all assignments.
• Must use creativity, independent judgment, and organizational and problem-solving skills to determine the best method to accomplish desired results.
