Revenue Service Specialist 1

The Iowa Department of Revenue’s Alcohol & Tax Compliance Division is seeking a Revenue Service Specialist 1 to join the Alcohol Licensing team. The Compliance Division oversees all facets of tax processing, issuances of business permits, and alcohol regulation throughout the state. From the receipt of individual and business tax returns and payments, audits and collections, to routine compliance inspections and regulatory verification of alcohol-licensed establishments, this division is tasked with upholding, enforcing and educating taxpayers and licensees on Iowa’s laws and regulations.

In this position you will:

  • Receive documents electronically and manually for processing. Prepare source data for entry into proprietary state systems by reviewing forms for accuracy and deficiencies
  • Process business license applications for accounts and issues licenses, certificates, and permits following department procedures. Handle confidential information, and make decisions based on strong understanding of license requirements and agency systems
  • Develop intermediate knowledge and skills to interpret Iowa Code and Rules applicable to Iowa Alcohol laws
  • Answers help line and assists with questions regarding Iowa alcohol laws and other licensing-related questions and escalating more complex inquiries to a Revenue Service Specialist 2 or 3, or to the appropriate Department of Revenue contact
  • Display a high level of initiative, effort, attention to detail and commitment by completing assignments efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Determine the level of technical or system assistance needed and take appropriate steps to resolve issues and relaying more complex issues to the Revenue Service Specialist 3

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:

  • Experience responding to and resolving customer inquiries by phone, email, and in person
  • Knowledge of business, accounting, and generalized office practices
  • Prior experience utilizing Microsoft Office, Google software, and Salesforce

Job Specific Competencies

  • Customer Service – Principles and processes for providing customer services, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluating customer satisfaction
  • Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times
  • Clerical Procedures – Word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in any field.

2) A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience in tax, accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, insurance, analysis of financial or business forms and data, or answering technical or tax-related questions.

3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work in tax, accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, insurance, analysis of financial or business forms and data, or answering technical or tax-related questions.
