WHAT YOU’LL DO
Our Retail Manager plays an important role in advancing Nevada Humane Society’s mission
As the Retail Manager, you play a vital role in advancing Nevada Humane Society’s mission to care for pets, find them homes, and save lives. Your primary responsibility is to ensure the retail store operates profitably by driving revenue growth, managing expenses, optimizing merchandising and inventory strategies, and delivering an exceptional customer experience. Through strong leadership, you guide volunteers with compassion and purpose while holding the team accountable to sales and operational goals.
In partnership with the Volunteer Manager, you ensure the retail store is appropriately staffed with trained and engaged volunteers to support daily operations and sales objectives. You collaborate to support volunteer onboarding, training, scheduling, and performance, ensuring alignment with organizational policies and fostering a positive, mission-driven retail environment.
Essential Responsibilities
Position-Specific Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day operations of the retail store, including sales, inventory management, and customer service.
- Develop and implement strategies to drive sales and maximize profitability while ensuring excellent customer satisfaction.
- Recruit, train, and schedule volunteers to assist with various tasks in the retail store, including customer service, merchandising, and inventory management.
- Create and maintain visually appealing merchandise displays and ensure the store is clean, organized, and well-maintained.
- Monitor inventory levels, place orders, and manage vendor relationships to ensure adequate stock of merchandise.
- Analyze sales data and trends to identify opportunities for growth and make informed decisions regarding product selection and pricing.
- Collaborate with other departments within the Nevada Humane Society to promote retail initiatives and support overall organizational goals.
- Partner with the Volunteer Manager to coordinate training for retail store volunteers, ensuring volunteers are properly onboarded and equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to support store operations and deliver excellent customer service.
- Collaborate with the Volunteer Manager to develop and manage volunteer scheduling for the retail store, maintaining appropriate coverage to support daily operations and sales goals.
- Work jointly with the Volunteer Manager to monitor and support volunteer performance in the retail store, providing feedback, coaching, and recognition to promote engagement, accountability, and a positive team environment.
- Support a welcoming and mission-driven retail environment, reinforcing service standards and fostering strong collaboration between volunteers and staff.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and policies, including those related to animal welfare, safety, and sanitation.
General Responsibilities
- Helps promote fundraising activities and solicit support of agency overall.
- Interacts with co-workers and volunteers in an efficient and courteous manner to ensure a cooperative team environment amongst all departments.
- Maintain and promote a positive public image relevant to Nevada Humane Society standards.
- Professionally represents Nevada Humane Society with customers, donors, and business partners.
- Attend and participate in departmental and shelter meetings. Attend educational conferences/seminars as recommended/approved.
- In the event of an emergency, assist with the handling and evacuation of animals located at any Nevada Humane Society campus.
- Participate in disaster preparedness and response activities for the organization and community as it pertains to pet related needs.
- Address and/or report any safety hazards or unsafe activities.
- Perform other responsibilities as requested by direct management, and/or the CEO.
Working conditions
Position-Specific Working Conditions:
- Must be available to address employee-related issues, including performance management and conflict resolution, which may involve high-stress situations and require timely decision-making.
- Air-conditioned office or air-conditioned building with computer and internet access.
- May require travel within a workday on a regular basis.
- Work is also performed outdoors and/or offsite for shelter events.
- Use of personal vehicles may be required for fieldwork; mileage allowance will be provided.
General Working Conditions
Working for NHS in any capacity is safety sensitive due to the responsibilities at this business that directly affect the wellbeing and safety of employees, animals and the public.
- Work will be performed in a variety of environmentally controlled and uncontrolled conditions.
- Due to the housing of live animals onsite, work hours may take place at any time within a 24-hour period, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Operational and public hours may vary by department or location and are subject to change. Attendance at events and other functions may require additional hours, holiday, weekend, evening overnight, or on-call work.
- Exposure to allergens produced by animal dander, saliva, or fur, throughout all areas of the shelter, or other locations.
- Exposure to zoonotic, or otherwise communicable disease.
- Exposure to animals with unpredictable or aggressive behavior.
- Exposure to animals that may scratch or bite unexpectedly.
- Exposure to direct or indirect injury from an animal or other mechanical means used to confine, control, or provide essential care for any animal housed with NHS.
- May require travel within a workday on a regular basis. May require overnight travel intermittently.

QualificationsExperience and Qualification Requirements

- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible retail management experience.
- Proven record of successfully managing retail operations and driving measurable sales growth, including development and execution of revenue-generating sales strategies.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, onboarding, training, and developing staff and/or volunteers.
- Strong customer service leadership skills.
- Proficiency in POS systems, inventory management, and retail reporting.
- Ability to analyze sales and inventory data, identify trends and gaps, and implement strategic adjustments to merchandising, pricing, and inventory levels to improve overall sales performance and profitability.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Ability to stay informed of community and animal welfare trends and adapt retail strategies accordingly.
