Job Description

About The Role

As Retail Correspondent on the Business Desk, your primary responsibility is to break major news, deliver agenda-setting exclusives, and produce sharp, authoritative analysis of the key trends, companies and forces shaping the retail sector.

You will be expected to develop top contacts in the retail industry, spanning supermarkets to fashion chains, as well as the latest issues and themes dominating the sector such as shoplifting and food shortages. You will be on top of the latest policy developments on your beat and the links between industry and government, from lobbying to donations.

You will also be able to turn your hand to reporting on other industries as requested by the Business Desk.

Applicants will need to have a sharp news sense and be demonstrable self-starters brimming with ideas. They will also need to be numerically literate, team players, and digitally savvy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for coverage of retail industries
  • Develop interview and feature ideas, with a focus on exclusive news and original ideas
  • Ability to spot trends and identify industry developments before they are widely reported
  • Ability to write for other parts of the newsroom and business department when required
  • Building up a detailed book of senior contacts

Key Skills

  • Experience of reporting on business news, with previous experience covering business in a newspaper, newswire or digital environment
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to spot exclusive new angles
  • Developing stories on digital and print platforms
  • Able to spot stories and opportunities from raw data – high level of numerical literacy
  • Demonstrable proof of the ability to tell stories in a concise but interesting way
  • A strong network of relevant contacts
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and keep calm under pressure
  • Experience of digital publishing and SEO
