Position Summary
The Retail Buyer is responsible for the strategic selection, purchasing, merchandising, and financial management of tennis, pickleball, fitness and/or golf retail—including both hard goods and soft goods. This role balances strong product knowledge, vendor relationships, financial accountability, and a high-touch, member-focused service mindset to ensure an exceptional retail experience that supports member satisfaction and departmental revenue goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Daily Responsibilities
- Order Awareness & Member Service - Proactively manage open orders to ensure accuracy, on-time delivery, and exceptional member service.
- Vendor Communication - Communicate with vendors to confirm availability, resolve issues, and maintain strong brand relationships.
- Product Knowledge - Maintain deep product knowledge across tennis, pickleball, fitness and/or golf categories to support staff and members.
- Invoicing & Receiving - Process invoices, receive merchandise, and ensure inventory accuracy within retail systems.
- Merchandise Monitoring - Monitor sales performance and on-floor inventory to identify replenishment and transfer needs.
- Communication & Support - Serve as a daily point of support for retail staff, answering product, inventory, and vendor questions.
Weekly Responsibilities
- Order & Delivery Tracking - Track orders and deliveries, adjusting timelines and priorities as needed to support business flow.
- Merchandising & Presentation - Collaborate on merchandising and floor presentation to align with brand standards and seasonal stories. On-trend, well-balanced assortments that resonate with club members.
- Marketing & Content Support - Support marketing initiatives by contributing product highlights, launches, and promotional content.
- Staff & Member Engagement - Engage with staff and members to gather feedback on product performance and assortment opportunities.
Monthly Responsibilities
- Financial Management - Manage retail budgets, margins, and open-to-buy to support financial goals.
- Inventory Management - Analyze inventory levels, sell-through, and aging stock to drive informed buying decisions.
- Assortment Review & Planning - Review and refine assortments based on performance, trends, and member demand.
- Branding & Events - Support branding initiatives, in-store events, demos, and vendor activations.
Seasonal Responsibilities
- Seasonal Buying & Planning - Plan and execute seasonal buying strategies aligned with tennis, pickleball, fitness and/or golf demand cycles.
- Operational & Team Support - Support operational needs during peak seasons, events, and tournaments.
- Quarterly inventory - Conduct and support quarterly inventory counts to ensure accuracy and financial integrity.
QualificationsMinimum
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Strong product knowledge in tennis, pickleball, fitness and/or golf retail (hard and soft goods).
- 3+ years of experience with retail buying, merchandising, and inventory management (club or specialty retail preferred).
- High level of organization and attention to detail, particularly with invoices and financial tracking.
- Strong understanding of retail financials, including margins, inventory turn, open-to-buy, and sell-through analysis.
- Proven ability to manage multiple vendors, orders, and timelines with a high level of accuracy and follow-through.
- Experience with retail POS and inventory management systems; proficiency in Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets.
- Merchandising eye with the ability to translate product assortments into compelling in-store presentations.
- Customer and member focused mindset, with a commitment to elevated service standards.
- Ability to analyze sales data and member feedback to inform buying and assortment decisions.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with members, staff, and vendors.
- Ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on daily execution.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, service-oriented, member-focused environment.
