Respiratory Therapists at Baystate Franklin Medical Center play a vital role in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary disorders. Working under the general supervision of a physician, therapists provide care across a range of clinical areas—including adult, pediatric, and neonatal populations.
This role involves a blend of patient assessment, therapeutic intervention, diagnostic testing, and equipment management. Therapists work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team to improve patient outcomes in acute, critical, and post-acute care settings.
1. Diagnostic Testing and Data Collection
Perform and interpret pulmonary function testing
Conduct interventional diagnostics and sleep studies
Administer blood gas analysis and related lab procedures
Assist with noninvasive and invasive diagnostic assessments
2. Therapeutic Interventions
Deliver medical gas, humidity, and aerosol therapies
Manage artificial airways and provide airway clearance techniques
Initiate and manage invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation
Support vascular access procedures and Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS), as appropriate
3. Clinical Assessment and Patient Monitoring
Conduct physical assessments and interpret diagnostic data
Adjust therapies based on clinical response and lab results
Perform regular patient rounds, making recommendations to providers as needed
Titrate oxygen therapy and manage equipment in accordance with infection control standards
4. Disease and Case Management
Manage both acute and chronic cardiopulmonary conditions
Participate in discharge planning and patient education
Support hemodynamic management in collaboration with the care team
5. Emergency and Critical Care Support
Respond to Rapid Response and Code Blue calls
Assist with patient transport (land/air) and emergency interventions
6. Equipment and Safety Oversight
Maintain equipment according to safety and infection control guidelines
Troubleshoot and document equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs
7. Education and Mentorship
Precept new staff, Respiratory Therapy students, and nursing residents
Support clinical education and departmental training initiatives
8. Certification and Clinical Advancement
Maintain current AHA certifications; NRP certification required in facilities with Obstetric services
Meet and maintain the clinical ladder criteria of a Level II Respiratory Therapist
Required:
Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
Licensed Respiratory Therapist (LRT) in Massachusetts
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the NBRC
Current BLS certification
Preferred:
Prior experience in acute or critical care settings
ACLS, PALS, and NRP certifications (or willingness to obtain, as applicable)
Familiarity with EPIC or other EMR systems

Compensation
Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
