Part Time - Nights

Overview

Mercy Hospital Washington is seeking a motivated Respiratory Intern to join our Respiratory Care team on a part-time basis. This position provides hands-on clinical experience for students currently enrolled in an accredited Respiratory Care program. Under the direction of physicians and the supervision of licensed Respiratory Care Practitioners, the Respiratory Intern assists in providing high-quality respiratory care while gaining valuable experience in a supportive, patient-centered environment.

What You'll Do

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Assist with respiratory therapy procedures and treatments as directed and within approved student scope of practice.
  • Observe, assess, and report patient conditions to the respiratory care team.
  • Support the implementation of respiratory care plans and evaluate patient responses to treatments.
  • Document patient care activities accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Assist in educating patients and families regarding respiratory treatments and therapies.
  • Demonstrate competency in the use and maintenance of respiratory equipment following required training and competency validation.

Team Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with respiratory therapists, nurses, physicians, patients, and families.
  • Participate in shift reports, daily huddles, meetings, and educational opportunities.
  • Escalate patient concerns and seek guidance appropriately in routine and complex situations.
  • Support continuity of care through clear, professional, and timely communication.

Safety & Quality

  • Follow all infection prevention and control guidelines, including proper PPE use.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to patient safety standards, including patient identification, fall prevention, and emergency response procedures.
  • Perform equipment safety checks and promptly report incidents or safety concerns.

Department Support

  • Assist with stocking, cleaning, and processing respiratory equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
  • Stay informed on departmental communications and policy updates.
  • Support additional respiratory care responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Respiratory Care program.

Licensure

  • Current Temporary Educational Permit (Respiratory Student License) in the state of Missouri.

Certification

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
