At Action for Children, we offer more than just a job. Join us and you’ll be part of a team dedicated to giving children safe and happy childhoods. See how your skills can make a real difference, helping solve the problems children and young people face every day.

A bit about the role

As a Residential Support Worker at Monksfield, you’ll play an important part in children’s daily lives — supporting them through routines, personal care, play, learning and social activities. Our children have moderate to severe learning difficulties and complex health needs, and your support helps them feel safe, understood and able to thrive.

You’ll help each young person build new skills, discover interests and grow in confidence through meaningful, engaging experiences that make their world bigger and brighter.

The role also involves completing risk assessments, contributing to care plans, advocating for each child and working closely with families and professionals to ensure their needs are met with care and consistency.

It’s an active, hands‑on role that calls for compassion, patience and genuine commitment. Staff often bring their own hobbies — from music to sports to crafts — to inspire children and open up new opportunities.

With varied shifts across mornings, evenings, nights and weekly sleep‑ins, flexibility is essential, and every day brings something different.

About the Service

Monksfield is a lively, energetic 24‑hour residential service, providing care and support seven days a week for children and young people who need a stable, nurturing and therapeutic environment. The home has a genuinely family‑like culture, where staff support one another, reflect together and celebrate every achievement — whether a young person builds confidence, tries something new or manages a difficult moment.

At it’s core, Monksfield is a place where every child is valued, encouraged and supported to experience life fully, without limits placed by disability. The team provides residential care for children and young people who need stability, consistency and a therapeutic approach. Staff work collaboratively to deliver meaningful activities, predictable routines and child‑centred support that promotes wellbeing, independence and positive outcomes.

The team is trained in trauma‑informed practice and works closely with families and external professionals to ensure each young person receives personalised, joined‑up care. Monksfield is a home filled with connection, purpose and possibility — a place where children can grow, thrive and feel truly understood.

What you do could make a difference

Some key responsibilities of the Residential Support Worker role are to;

  • Show compassion, emotional resilience and a positive, steady approach when faced with challenging situations.
  • Communicate openly and effectively with children, families and professionals, using a range of techniques to build trust, understanding and strong relationships.
  • Take a solution‑focused approach to problem‑solving, working independently and alongside your team to find the best way forward.
  • Value diversity and inclusivity, showing sensitivity, respect and genuine care for the needs of all children and colleagues.

Let’s talk about you

Are you resilient and able to approach change and challenge with a positive mindset? We’re looking for someone with a genuine ‘can do’ attitude to join our team and make a real difference. Ideally, you’ll have:

  • Experience working within a care setting and supporting children or young people.
  • A Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare, or be working towards it (to be completed within two years of starting).
  • Experience and training in safeguarding, with a strong commitment to keeping children safe.
  • An innovative, creative approach to problem‑solving, bringing fresh ideas and confidence to challenging situations.
  • Experience in developing tailored care plans that reflect each child’s individual needs.
  • The ability to create a safe, nurturing and fun environment for both staff and children — whether in the home or out in the community.

Why Action for Children?

Every child should have a loving home, food, warmth, the chance to grow and learn - the support to cope with life’s challenges. But too many children don’t. By bringing your passion and unique skills and experience, you’ll help us change that where it really matters.

We've been driven by love to take action for children for over 150 years, giving them the protection and practical help they need. A lot’s changed since 1869. But what children really need, hasn’t. So as long as children need us, we’ll be here.
