Shrub Oak International School (SOIS) is a therapeutic day and residential school for autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions. Located in northern Westchester County, Shrub Oak offers unparalleled educational opportunities for autistic students in a family-centric, supportive environment. We offer a variety of programs to meet the needs of students across the spectrum, and our curriculum is based on the most advanced and successful evidence-based clinical and academic approaches in ASD education.

As a school, SOIS maintains a smoke-free environment to ensure the health and safety of our students, employees, and community. We are a residential boarding school located on a scenic 127-acre campus which includes multiple buildings and a working farm for student programming. The work environment will include both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Who You Are:
  • You have a passion for working with the autism population and ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.
  • You get the job done and are capable of strategic thinking while simultaneously rolling up to your sleeves to lead and teach by example.
  • You have the knowledge of crisis prevention, intervention strategies, and behavior plans.
  • You have critical thinking, information retention, and crisis-decision making skills, especially during crisis and/or under pressure.
  • You have a strong judgment for daily role coordination with the ability to coordinate, supervise, develop, and engage new and existing DSP staff.
  • You have a familiarity with administrative processes and operations.
  • You have exceptional written and verbal communication abilities to complete documentation, reports, and any other required duties.
  • You have the ability to maintain confidentiality, multitask, and collaborate with frequent disruptions/interruptions present.
 
Job Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate daily care for residential students by overseeing Residential staff.
  • Assign staff for programming and activities based on student needs outlined in ITEPs and other plans.
  • Mentor and guide Residential staff by supporting professional growth and development; orient and train new staff to foster competence and confidence.
  • Enforce policies and procedures to promote an inclusive and respectful community; report emergencies promptly according to policies.
  • Build and maintain respectful, trusting relationships with students, addressing their unique needs and goals.
  • Mentor students on life skills, collaborating with staff and clinicians as needed ensuring it supports the students ITEPs and development goals while documenting progress.
  • Ensure students adhere to daily schedules and activities

Position Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred
  • 3+ years in high-demand/high-volume customer service or human services position is required; EMT/EMS, CAN/HHA/PCA experience preferred.
  • Experience in crisis management, de-escalation, and customer service required
  • Previous experience as a shift leader or in a related leadership position is preferred
  • Experience assisting in with and/or providing hygiene and personal care activities is preferred
  • Experience working with neurodiverse children, adolescents, or young adults in a residential and/or education setting required
  • Due to the nature of work in supporting our students, all job description list the physical requirements for that position
  • Our campus consists of some paved areas but primarily consists of grass, gravel paths and parking lots. Additionally, many areas of our building are fully accessible, however, as a historic building some areas are only accessible by stairs.
  • You must be able to ambulate around the campus, including hills, stairs, grass and gravel.
  • Student Facing Positions:
    • Must be able to react and move quickly during student crisis, both for the safety of the student and for the staff.
    • Must be able to run across the campus and throughout the school to catch/monitor an eloping student, and/or to remove yourself from an unsafe situation.
    • You must be able to pass TCIS (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training for Schools).
      • You must be able to bend, stretch, sit, stand, crouch or kneel for sustained periods of time if implementing a hold.
