Job Description
The Residential Life Coordinator is a live-in, student-centered, collaborative professional who policies and procedures for the Residential Life program, by assisting in the management of a residential community of approximately 430 students and supervises 13-15 student Resident Assistants. The Residential Life Coordinator is first and foremost a residential educator who is responsible for creating and sustaining a community of artists. The Residential Life Coordinator is also a generalist in Student Affairs and is responsible for supporting the development of and improvement of the quality of student life – including advocacy, health and wellness, and integration into the CalArts community.
Note: This position is required to live in a residence hall on campus. Availability to work extended hours will be required as needed, including evening, early morning, and weekend assignments.
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Oversee student development programming in the residence halls.
- Collaborate with Associate Director of Residential Life to manage operational functions for residence halls, such as key distribution and collection, damage assessment, reporting and billing, and hall openings and closings.
- Collaborates as facility manager for residence halls including conducting room checks, reporting, and following up on custodial, maintenance, and other requests.
- Cultivate, coordinate, and assist in the development of student leadership, community and responsibility through social, recreational, cultural, and educational programming and direct involvement with residents.
- Establish and maintain advising relationships with students living in the residence halls through individual contacts, meetings, and discussions and serve as a mediator/facilitator, when necessary, to help resolve interpersonal conflicts between students.
- Be aware of and responsive to the special needs and concerns of underrepresented students and initiate programming and other efforts in the halls to address these needs and concerns.
- Advise, counsel and advocate for all residents, especially those from underrepresented or under-served populations.
- Assists in developing and managing the Residential Life programming budget.
- Ensure awareness of student conduct and community standards
- Act to control unnecessary/unreasonable residence hall damages and vandalism and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues in Facilities, Campus Safety, Counseling Services, Health Services and other Student Experience departments and programs.
- Assists in crisis response duty as needed.
- Directly supervise undergraduate or graduate students who serve as Resident Assistants in Institute-owned residence halls, and interns as appropriate.
- Recruit, select, train, and evaluate Resident Assistants and monitor work performance for accuracy and completeness in accordance with Department and Institute goals and objectives while ensuring compliance by staff of Residential policies and procedures.
- Participate in the overall planning and management of the residence hall system.
- Assist the Associate Director of Residential Life in making recommendations for the purchase of furnishings and equipment, improving custodial services, and initiating preventative maintenance and safety measures.
- May serve on various Institute and Divisional committees such as Staff Council, Safety and Disaster Preparedness Committee, and the Equity and Diversity Committee.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Ability to work independently, as a member of the student experience team, and with a highly selective and creative student population within a rigorous artistic setting.
- Ability to prepare and present intentional educational and social programs in the halls.
- Work effectively in a dynamic and diverse environment
