Job Description

The Residential Driver is responsible for safely operating a collection truck, providing prompt and courteous service to customers, and ensuring the proper collection and disposal of residential waste and recyclables in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Reports To:

Operations Supervisor

Essential Job Duties:

  • Operate residential collection truck in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Collect waste and recyclables from residential customers on assigned routes.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of the vehicle.
  • Communicate with dispatch and route supervisors regarding issues or delays.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of the vehicle.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and DOT regulations.
  • Provide excellent customer service and resolve customer concerns when necessary.

Scope of Responsibility:

Responsible for the safe and timely collection of residential waste and recyclables. Expected to follow assigned routes and schedules with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate heavy-duty trucks and related equipment.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret route sheets and maps.
  • Basic familiarity with mobile devices such as tablets or route tracking apps.
  • Ability to enter service notes and complete route information electronically.
  • Comfort using handheld scanners, GPS applications, and other digital tools as required by operations.

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid CDL Class B license with air brake endorsement.
  • Minimum of 1 year of commercial driving experience preferred.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Regularly lift and carry heavy loads, often up to 75 pounds or more.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, and reaching to collect garbage.
  • Long hours of driving, often in congested or hazardous conditions.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • High noise levels from trucks and machinery.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials and unpleasant odors.

Travel Required:

  • Local travel only; no overnight travel required.
