Direct Support Professional (DSP)

Location: Residential Program, Brooklyn
Schedule: Full-Time shifts (7am-3pm, 3-11pm and 11pm-9am) and Part-Time shifts (minimum 22 hrs/week)

✅ What You’ll Do:

  • Provide hands-on support for daily living, including helping with : meals, dressing, and personal care.

  • Teach important life skills such as cooking, shopping, and other household tasks. .

  • Administer medication, assist with health routines (paid training included!)

  • Accompany individuals to medical appointments,

  • Encourage social connections, community engagement, and participation in fun activities.Document your work and communicate regularly with your team

  • Handle challenges with respect, sensitivity, patience

🎓 What You Need to Get Started:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • A valid NYS driver’s license (most programs require it)

  • Willingness to complete and become certified in:

  • AMAP (meds)

  • CPR/First Aid

  • SCIP-R (crisis management)

  • A big heart, clear communication skills, and a can-do attitude!



Qualifications

🎓 What You Need to Get Started:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • A valid NYS driver’s license (most programs require it)

  • Willingness to complete and become certified in:

  • AMAP (meds)

  • CPR/First Aid

  • SCIP-R (crisis management)

  • A big heart, clear communication skills, and a can-do attitude!

  • 1+ year working with people with developmental disabilities

  • Experience in residential or health-related settings

  • Strong teamwork and documentation skills

👟 Physical & Work Environment This is a hands-on role—you’re not just watching, you’re doing

  • You'll need to be comfortable with lifting, physical care, and active days

  • Morning (7am-3pm), late afternoon (3-11pm) and overnight (11pm-9am) shifts available

  • Shifts may also include weekends and holidays

  • You have a strong sense of responsibility and reliability: you care about the people that you serve and stay until the next team member arrives

Block Institute of Brooklyn, New York, is a non-profit, non-sectarian agency dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families. Established in 1962, Block Institute has extensive experience providing individualized services for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

For nearly 50 years, Block Institute has been a beacon of hope for the developmentally disabled and their families. Our program offerings include Special Education and Evaluation Services for children with special needs ages three to eight years old. For adults with disabilities who are age 18 and older, we provide Day Habilitation, Vocational Services, Day Treatment, and quality Residential Care in a family like setting. Our adult programs help individuals with disabilities to develop increased independence, individuality, productivity and community inclusion.
