Where Safety, Wellbeing & Community Come Together

CONSTANT partners with leading institutions across Australia to deliver safety services that go beyond traditional security. At Queen’s College, part of the University of Melbourne, this role is not about standing guard — it’s about being a trusted, visible presence who contributes to a safe, respectful, and inclusive residential community.

We are committed to Integrity, Community, Collaboration, Excellence, and Inclusion, and we are seeking professionals who embody these values in both action and mindset.

A Role with Purpose - This is a Resident Support Officer (RSO) position designed for individuals who understand that safety is deeply connected to wellbeing, trust, and human connection.

You will play a key role in supporting students after hours — not only responding to incidents but proactively contributing to a culture where students feel safe, respected, and supported.

Our Commitment to Safety & Gender-Based Violence Prevention

CONSTANT and Queen’s College maintain a zero-tolerance approach to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in all its forms — including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic harm.

In line with the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-Based Violence, all staff share responsibility to:

  • Promote a safe and respectful environment

  • Recognise and respond appropriately to concerning behaviours

  • Support early intervention and escalation where required

Important: As part of this role, candidates will be required to complete appropriate disclosures and screening in line with these obligations.

Roster

Roster: Monday to Friday | 10:00 PM – 8:00 AM (overnight shifts)

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a calm, approachable and professional presence within the residential community

  • Build positive rapport with students through respectful and engaging interaction

  • Provide after-hours wellbeing support and respond to student concerns

  • Conduct welfare-focused patrols (not enforcement-driven)

  • Assist with lockouts, general enquiries, and access support

  • Identify and respond to early signs of distress, risk, or conflict

  • Escalate incidents appropriately to emergency services or on-call teams

  • Maintain clear and accurate incident reports

  • Collaborate with residential life staff and university stakeholders

  • Support a culture of safety, inclusion, and belonging

Who We’re Looking For

We are seeking mature, emotionally intelligent professionals who can operate with sound judgement and empathy in a student environment.

This role suits individuals from backgrounds such as:

  • Security (community-focused)

  • Youth work / community services

  • Allied health / mental health support

  • Education / student services

  • Hospitality or customer-facing roles with strong interpersonal skills

You will stand out if you demonstrate:

  • Strong awareness of mental health and wellbeing support

  • Confidence handling sensitive situations with discretion and care

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • The ability to remain composed under pressure

  • A genuine interest in supporting young people

  • A collaborative, non “guard mindset” approach to safety

Mandatory Requirements
  • Current Victorian Security Licence (REQUIRED)

  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification

  • Valid Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain)

  • Availability for overnight shifts (Mon–Fri)

  • Strong English communication skills

Professional Boundaries & Role Requirements

As part of our commitment to providing appropriate support to all residents, this role is subject to a genuine occupational requirement, and gender may be considered to ensure a balanced and representative team.

Given the residential setting, Resident Support Officers must maintain strict professional boundaries at all times, including engaging respectfully and impartially with residents, avoiding personal or intimate relationships, and adhering to all Gender-Based Violence prevention, reporting, and response obligations.
