Job Description

As Resident Senior Design Engineer – Doel in our Design Brussels Civil Works department of the Metier ‘Civil Engineering & Infra’, part of the Business Area Gas, Energy and Nuclear, you will contribute to our mission by playing a crucial role in a wide variety of civil engineering design activities.
Those activities range from newbuild projects that often run over several years, short-term renovation projects as well as ad hoc assistance.
We cover the full life span of projects, so you can be involved in all design stages, be it conceptual, basic, detail, execution design… as well as construction follow-up including non-conformance resolution and modification requests.
As Resident Design Engineer in the Doel Nuclear Power Station, you are the Brussels Design Team antenna in Doel. Depending on your professional track record, a bespoke onboarding plan will be established for you to absorb the context (technical, quality assurance, nuclear safety…). At the beginning of your assignment, you therefore will regularly be in Brussels as well (2d per week).

Your key responsibilities

You design and verify the design of others, where designing includes a.o.

  • performing structural analyses,
      • a.o. by means of Finite Element Modeling
      • according to the relevant standards, e.g. Eurocodes as well as American Standards such as ASCE, ACI, USNRC (SRP and RG), …);
      • including dynamic analyses of nuclear structures and components to various hazards: earthquake, gas explosion, tornado, airplane crash
    • interfacing with our drafting office
    • interfacing with our other Métiers in a multidisciplinary approach
    • contributing to writing of technical specifications (design requirements) and reviewing of technical documents issued by Contractors (method statements, calculation notes for temporary situations…)
  • You are accountable for respecting commitments with respect to the design activities, i.e. scope & schedule
  • You mentor junior engineers and share your experience and expertise with the team

We would love to hear from people with

  • A Civil Engineering degree with at least 20 years of experience in structural analysis and design;
  • Experience in general purpose Finite Element and structural codes (such as ANSYS, SCIA, ..) for static loads or dynamic loads, in case of linear or non-linear analysis ;
  • Practical hands-on mentality needed for a designer of industrial structures to be delivered with the appropriate quality and within the schedule
  • Curiosity to discover the nuclear business in general (nuclear safety, quality assurance) and its structural engineering challenges in particular (earthquake, explosion, tornado and airplane crash)
  • Knowledge of international codes and standards (Eurocodes as well as American Standards such as ASCE, ACI, USNRC (SRP and RG), …);
  • Willingness to invest into a long-term assignment
  • Willingness to work in an industrial environment demanding several checks and balances, operating in a collaborative environment
  • You have a scientific mind, and you are rigorous
  • You can communicate in Dutch, English and French are a plus.
  • You have good writing skills for technical notes.
  • You have experience in mentoring junior engineers
