Summary

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks a General Maintenance Technician. This is a permanent, full-time (12-month position, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

The Resident Life Coordinator is a live-in professional staff member who plays a vital role in fostering a vibrant, supportive, and inclusive residential community. This position encompasses all the core responsibilities of a Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) with a focus on enhancing student engagement, programming, and peer collaboration. Under the direction of the Dean of Students, the RLC coordinates department-wide engagement initiatives, contributes to staff training and development, and serves as a peer mentor to Resident Assistants (RAs). This role helps advance the residential experience while supporting the broader goals of the Student Development division and provides additional leadership regarding compliance efforts related to FERPA, Title IX, institutional safety, and reporting protocols. This position will supervise 2 RAs directly.

Responsibilities of the Resident Life Coordinator:

• Core Residential Staff Functions: Maintains regular office hours and on-call duties that include monitoring the building, the sign-out system, and nightly safety checks, as well as performing weekly cleanliness inspections. Communicates facility-related issues by placing work requests promptly and following up as required.
• Residential Community Development: Fosters a developmentally supportive and positive residential environment through proactive relationship-building and inclusive community programming. Directs, guides, and supervises students in all non-academic areas. Serves as a visible presence in the residence halls and responds to the needs of students and other live-in staff with empathy and professionalism. Mediates student community conflicts as needed and promotes respectful communication. Communicates with parents and guardians as needed. Prepares wellness reports and regularly updates parents regarding their students' progress.
• Resident Engagement Leadership: Assists with the development and coordination of residential engagement initiatives aligned with institutional values (e.g., wellness, leadership, service). Provides insights to RLCs and RAs in designing and implementing intentional programs. Maintains an annual engagement calendar and assesses the impact of engagement efforts through student feedback and participation data. Ensures all floors have at least one residential engagement activity per month.
• Training and Peer Development: Collaborates with the Dean of Students to support training for RLCs and RAs, including planning sessions, onboarding, and mid-year refreshers. Serves as a peer resource and mentor for other RLCs and RAs on student development topics, programming strategy, and policy implementation. Offers informal coaching and troubleshooting for day-to-day student issues.
• Student Support and Crisis Response: Participates in the professional staff on-call rotation, responding to emergencies and crises with discretion and care. Serves as a conduct officer for low-to mid-level student conduct matters and ensure timely, accurate documentation. Provides referrals and follow-up for students of concern and collaborates with campus partners on student support interventions. Coordinates closely with the Department of Public Safety, Campus Security, and Facilities Department, and serves as a first responder for building emergencies. Accompanies students to medical appointments and/or emergency room visits as needed. Trains and provides leadership to other residential staff regarding FERPA, Title IX, institutional safety policies, and ensures accurate and timely incident reporting in accordance with institutional protocols.
• Other duties as assigned.

Examples of duties

A bachelor's degree in human service-related field with comparable experience. Strong communication skills, particularly written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to and successful experience working with diverse populations. Candidates must also possess a valid driver's license.

Additional Requirements:

• This is a live-in position requiring day, night, and weekend work, including rotating duty/call shifts. The RLCs are front line emergency responders who are often called on to transport students in emergencies and serve as a resource to other colleagues when they travel with students.
