Join the Team at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center as a Resident Engagement Coordinator and make a direct impact on the lives of incarcerated youth! We are hiring for a Resident Engagement Coordinator to oversee and manage the facility’s incentive/game room, offering youth a fun and positive space equipped with PlayStation IV’s, Nintendo Switches, and more. You’ll ensure the delivery of hot foods and snacks, while fostering an environment that promotes pro-social engagement through Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

In addition, you’ll help develop and lead the Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) program, including managing resident incentives and facilitating access to facility-wide activities such as basketball, pickleball, and flag football. Additionally, you will also be responsible for overseeing the operations of the facility’s incentive room, delivering hot foods and snacks while fostering a positive and safe environment. This position requires a rotating schedule, including after-hours (5:00pm to 8:00pm) and weekend duties.

Core responsibilities include and are not limited to:

Ensure security and safety by providing sight and direct supervision to residents engaging in incentives activities and programmatic offerings, intervene in behavioral crisis situations to ensure safety through the use of de -escalation strategies and techniques, use team observations of residents’ behavior and their adjustment to programs and processes this information with the entire team during weekly team meetings to create strategies for improvement, and provides behavioral coaching to residents, in accordance with program guidelines.

All new hires will be required to complete a mandatory five-week basic skills training located at the Virginia Public Safety Training Center in Hanover, Virginia. Training is typically held Monday-Friday, beginning at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. each day.

Additional desirable skills (not limited to):

  • Experience utilizing evidence-based strategies to engage residents and motivate desired performance.
  • A background in youth development, criminal justice, social sciences, or related field.
  • Experience utilizing PBIS, Motivational Interviewing, EPICS, Anger Replacement Training, basic behavior management, mental health first aid, trauma-informed care, and mindfulness training desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly assess situations and provide the appropriate response, Selected applicant(s) for this position are subject to a background investigation and pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must complete Department of Juvenile Justice’s mandated training and certifications.
  • Requires in-person, face to face work with the public to include staff and/or juveniles in our care.
  • Requires participation in collaborative/multidisciplinary staff meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Customer service experience
  • Working knowledge of safety and security procedures
  • Familiarity with conflict resolution and verbal intervention techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to write and review reports
  • Experience performing physical intervention (restraint) techniques as required in accordance with procedure and training.

Additional Considerations

  • Prior experience facilitating group sessions with adolescents in direct care settings (e.g., group home, detention center, or non-secure residential setting).
