Job Location Ithaca, NY 14850 Position Type Seasonal Salary Range $400.00 - $400.00 Salary

The Resident Camp Counselor (Counselor) is responsible for acting as the primary caregiver for their assigned unit campers, including ensuring a safe and healthy environment is maintained, supervising camper behavior, identifying and managing hazards, and promoting the tenets of the Girl Scout Law. The Counselor is responsible for planning and leading the session(s) activities, with input from campers, and ensuring brochure content occurs. The counselor will assist other staff in facilitating activities at program areas such as, but not limited to, swimming and boating.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Additional duties may be assigned)

  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their unit, during all unit times, which includes meals, all-camp activities, activities at program areas, and transition times.

  • Apply basic principles of youth development, connect with the campers, and work with campers to create positive and meaningful relationships utilizing communication, respect and empowerment.

  • Act as a positive role model for campers.

  • Take an active role in the camp community by participating enthusiastically in all aspects of camp, including camp traditions.

  • Strive to provide a fun, exciting, and inviting atmosphere for all campers.

  • Maintain campers’ overall health and safety while at camp, alerting the Camp Director and Health Supervisor of any issues, and ensuring each campers’ personal health and hygiene needs are met.

  • Follow all safety procedures and camp rules, including New York Department of Health, Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints, and American Camp Association Standards.

  • Interact with campers’ parents, utilizing strong customer service skills and maintaining good rapport.

  • Work cooperatively with fellow staff members to ensure a positive camp environment

  • Assist with check-in and check-out procedures.

  • Ensure unit area, bathrooms, and common program areas are clean and ready for the next camp session.

  • Assist with weekly camp clean up, including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, trash pick- up, etc.

  • Plan and implement weekly activities for your unit. Use girl planning and brochure information.

  • Lead activities such as but not limited to archery, arts & crafts, field games, and hike.



Qualifications

Minimum Qualification Standards:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.

  • Believe in the Girl Scout mission.

  • Desire to work with children in the outdoors and to immerse one’s self in the outdoor environment.

  • Prior summer day or resident camp experience preferred.

  • CPR/First Aid training, or willingness to obtain

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and details simultaneously.

  • Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, a high level of flexibility, and willingness to be a part of the camp community.

  • Ability to work productively in a fast paced, stressful environment.

  • Prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching

  • Moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds)

  • Walking on uneven terrain and hills

  • Endurance to meet emergency needs

  • Ability (and willingness) to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Light mental and visual attention required for performing work where there is some variety but actions taken and decisions made are limited to few possibilities. Work requires some coordination with others.
