Resident Assistant

Position Summary

Resident Assistants are an essential part of our Wellness Team, providing basic personal assistance and support to residents to help maintain their highest level of functional independence and psychosocial wellness under the direction and supervision of an RN or LPN.

Memory care experience is required. Candidates must have previous experience working with residents with dementia and/or Alzheimer’s disease.

Resident Assistant Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide companionship, build rapport, and establish trusting relationships with residents.
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living, including ambulation, transferring, showering, personal hygiene, incontinence care, feeding, reminders, and supervision.
  • Gather and assist residents with activities; conduct activities in groups or one-on-one with residents as requested.
  • Perform daily tasks in a safe manner and adhere to all safety procedures.
  • Serve residents’ meals and complete after-meal cleanup.
  • Ensure resident rooms are clean and tidy throughout each day. Responsible for resident laundry, as assigned.
  • Observe residents and report any concerns, including skin breakdown, rashes, behavioral changes, speech changes, changes in appearance, or other changes in condition, to the Wellness Director.
  • Follow established safety regulations, including fire protection, infection control, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous waste, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Communicate with family members, visitors, and volunteers in a customer service-oriented manner.
  • Report all changes in residents’ psychosocial and physical conditions, including skin breakdown, to the Wellness Director.
  • Report all complaints, grievances, and instances of abuse to the Wellness Director and/or Executive Director.
  • Answer all emergency response system calls immediately.
  • Provide post-mortem care as instructed.
  • Complete all required documentation and paperwork.
  • Participate in Wellness meetings and mandatory trainings to ensure compliance with all regulations and policies.
  • Ensure compliance with American House’s mission and philosophy, as well as all written policies and procedures governing the Wellness Department.
  • Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with policies and procedures and as instructed by the Wellness Director and other members of the leadership team.

Resident Assistant Required Skills/Abilities

  • Required: Previous experience working in Memory Care and providing care to residents with dementia and/or Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with both residents and staff.
  • Ability to lift, pull, push, and carry up to 40 pounds and move about the community quickly to provide emergency assistance to residents.
  • Ability to maintain a safe environment for residents and co-workers and transport residents and equipment as appropriate.
  • Ability to demonstrate patience, compassion, and understanding when working with residents experiencing cognitive impairment, dementia, or Alzheimer’s disease.

Resident Assistant Preferred Skills/Abilities

  • Experience working with seniors.
  • CNA certification.
  • Previous experience in Assisted Living or Memory Care.

Resident Assistant Education and Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent educational experience.
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Previous Memory Care experience, including direct experience working with residents with dementia and/or Alzheimer’s disease, is required.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, TB test, and physical.
