Job Description

The Researcher (Editorial and Operations Specialist) will support the research and program operations of the NYU Ethics and Journalism Initiative. The Ethics and Journalism Initiative is an externally-funded project of the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University and is committed to advancing ethical journalistic practices through commentary, research, workshops, training, and financial awards.

The Researcher (Editorial and Operations Specialist) will conduct research on contemporary journalism ethics issues to expand the following Initiative programs:

• Ethicsandjournalism.org, the Initiative’s website. Research will be conducted to create resources, best practice guides, and interviews with leading journalists.
• Ethics in Your Newsroom” training program. Research will be conducted to identify new client newsrooms, develop curriculum, and coordinate in-person and virtual training sessions.
• Collier Awards for Ethics in Journalism. Research will be conducted to identify potential entrants and manage and develop annual awards ceremony and symposium.
• Workshops and events. Research will be conducted to determine event topics, visiting panelists, and online marketing, promotion, and event production.

This position will require a hybrid/remote work schedule of 2-day per week remote and 3-days per week on campus.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $65,000- $75,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Qualifications

Required Education

A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, arts and sciences, or a related field.

Preferred Experience

1-2 years of professional experience in a journalism, communications, research, policy, or events role.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Strong interest in contemporary debates in journalism ethics, including on topics like AI and democracy, and commitment to promoting ethical journalism in the public interest.
• Strong organizational and administrative skills, including an ability to manage multiple projects, communicate with internal and external stakeholders, and meet project deadlines. Experience coordinating with outside vendors is a plus.
• Basic knowledge of content creation tools like Canva, Adobe Suite, or similar platforms.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience planning or supporting in-person and online events.

Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must be well versed in quality data collection to ensure adequacy, accuracy and legitimacy of data in NYU systems and be able to strictly follow data privacy and security procedures for data handling and analysts to ensure adherence to legal and institutional standards.
